Episode 1948

Communication or Chaos: Surviving Home Remodels Together

Are you ready to put your relationship to the ultimate test? This week, Eric G dives into the not-so-fun reality of remodeling and how it can seriously shake things up in your love life. As it turns out, tackling a renovation project isn’t just about picking out paint colors and countertops; it’s like a high-stakes game of communication and teamwork. Eric shares some wild stories, including a shocking encounter where a couple’s dream build nearly spiraled into chaos—who knew laundry cabinets could cause such drama? So grab your partner, tune in, and let’s chat about whether your relationship can survive the renovation rollercoaster. Trust me, you’ll want to listen before you grab that sledgehammer!

When diving into the intricate world of remodeling, one must understand that it’s not just about paint swatches and tile samples—it's about navigating the rocky waters of relationships, too! Eric G. takes us on a not-so-fuzzy journey through the emotional landscape that remodeling can create. Think about it: you're embarking on a project that might involve strangers in your home, hammers banging, and the lingering scent of sawdust. Stress levels can skyrocket, and suddenly, decisions about cabinet colors can lead to epic showdowns worthy of reality TV. Eric shares his personal experiences with clients, highlighting how communication—or lack thereof—can turn a dream renovation into a nightmare. With anecdotes that range from the hilariously absurd to the downright concerning, he reminds us of the importance of checking in with our partners before diving headfirst into a remodeling adventure. So before you pick up that sledgehammer, maybe have a heart-to-heart with your significant other—because the last thing you want is to be fighting over backsplash designs instead of enjoying your new space!

Takeaways:

  • Remodeling can put your relationship to the ultimate stress test, so buckle up!
  • Communication is key during renovations – make sure you're on the same page before diving in.
  • Evaluate your relationship health before starting a project; it’s cheaper than couples therapy!
  • Don't let remodeling turn into a relationship demolition – check in with each other regularly!
  • Stress from home projects can lead to conflicts; plan ahead to avoid chaos and drama.
  • A remodel may seem exciting, but it can reveal cracks in your relationship – be prepared!

Speaker A:

When it comes to remodeling or renovating your home, there is a lot to know and we have gotcha covered.

Speaker A:

This is around the House.

Speaker A:

Welcome to the Round the House show, the next generation of home improvement.

Speaker A:

I'm Eric G.

Speaker A:

Thanks for joining me today.

Speaker A:

This is our weekday update.

Speaker A:

This is our update that happens between the shows on the weekend that maybe the stuff that we didn't cover then and aren't going to cover next weekend.

Speaker A:

And we've got an interesting one today that I thought we've really never talked about this, but it's such an important one.

Speaker A:

And before though we do that, let's talk about our sponsor, Monument Grills.

Speaker A:

Check them out.

Speaker A:

They have a brand new series out there, the Evanescence series.

Speaker A:

These are smart grills, touchscreens you can use in full daylight or at night.

Speaker A:

It'll tell you how much propane you got.

Speaker A:

You could set your cook, do all the things you can with a smart barbecue and you can save some money doing it.

Speaker A:

Lit knobs.

Speaker A:

Depending on the series you're looking for within this, they've got three models that just came out last week and they are killer.

Speaker A:

Check them out@montymc grills.com well, I wanted to talk today and have a little more of a serious conversation.

Speaker A:

It's something that's not home improvement, but it's really home improvement remodeling related.

Speaker A:

And this is for all you people out there out there that are in some kind of relationship and whether you're married, you know, you've got a spouse, you've got a life partner, doesn't matter.

Speaker A:

Same rules apply.

Speaker A:

Now here's the thing.

Speaker A:

When you take on remodeling projects in your home, whether it's a huge project like a kitchen remodel or an exterior remodel or something small like a bathroom, this is going to be one of the largest tests of your relationship.

Speaker A:

Because this is where communication, this is where thoughtfulness, this is where discussions, design, planning, all those things have to come together.

Speaker A:

And then you're throwing all these other people in the mix that can cause headaches for you, the contractors, it's all cool at the beginning, but what happens is, is you go through design, you're oh, I'm ready to go, let's go.

Speaker A:

You sign the dotted line, people start rolling up into your house and if they're working inside, they are now in your space 40 plus hours a week.

Speaker A:

And that can create a ton of stress because now you've got all this added dimension of these other people making noise.

Speaker A:

Creating dust in your way, violating your personal space, whatever it is.

Speaker A:

And that can be very taxing.

Speaker A:

So my recommendation, and trust me, remodeling has created a ton of relationship stress in my life.

Speaker A:

And I'm the one that's doing a lot of it, too.

Speaker A:

So this is something.

Speaker A:

And this last year has not been easy, I'll tell you that.

Speaker A:

But these are things that do a little self check and a good discussion to make sure things are good before you start it.

Speaker A:

Great example.

Speaker A:

I had a couple that.

Speaker A:

I'm going to be a little vague here just because I don't want to violate anyone's privacy.

Speaker A:

There's a project.

Speaker A:

It was a new build, not in the Portland area where I live now.

Speaker A:

Previous job.

Speaker A:

This couple was so out of control and they were building their dream house, beautiful home, but she was flying off the handle and losing it.

Speaker A:

Now, this was a new build, so it's not like people were in her space.

Speaker A:

But holy smokes, this is the only time that I was close to having call the police to break things up.

Speaker A:

And I am.

Speaker A:

No, I have no patience for domestic violence situations.

Speaker A:

I am not.

Speaker A:

And that is just one of those things that I was like, I had to break it up.

Speaker A:

And it was her, not him, that was being violent.

Speaker A:

We were standing there in the laundry room, going over the laundry room cabinets that he had approved and discussed with her.

Speaker A:

And she didn't like it and was trying to make changes and drawings were signed by both of them.

Speaker A:

And she's like, well, I want to do it this way now.

Speaker A:

I'm like, great, no problem.

Speaker A:

We could order more stuff, but we're going to have to change it.

Speaker A:

You'll have to have your builder uninstall this.

Speaker A:

We'll put some new stuff in.

Speaker A:

We'll have to make some changes, get some orders, and we can get this going.

Speaker A:

Well, he liked the plan that was there.

Speaker A:

Thirty seconds, 60 seconds later, she's throwing haymakers.

Speaker A:

And I wasn't going to put myself in the middle of that, but I had to go, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, with the contractor and say, hey, guys, we're getting to a point here where I'm going to have to call the police in your own home.

Speaker A:

And I don't want to have to do that.

Speaker A:

This is so not cool.

Speaker A:

And had to jump in and break it up.

Speaker A:

These are the things that happen.

Speaker A:

Now, hopefully she got the help she needed because violence is never the answer in a relationship like that.

Speaker A:

Especially over laundry room cabinetry.

Speaker A:

You kidding me?

Speaker A:

Get a grip.

Speaker A:

But those are the Things that we don't want to see out there.

Speaker A:

So for you people out there listening that are thinking about tackling that project where you're hiring somebody or it's a big diy, maybe take a step back, do a little self evaluation and go, all right, is our relationship in a space?

Speaker A:

And communicate that with your significant other.

Speaker A:

Sit down and go, hey, how are we doing?

Speaker A:

Can we handle this in our space?

Speaker A:

We're at.

Speaker A:

Everybody has their crap, right?

Speaker A:

Everybody's got their junk in life.

Speaker A:

Everybody's got their trauma, everybody's got the drama.

Speaker A:

There's always something going on because that's life.

Speaker A:

But just think a little bit ahead and go, okay, are we in a good spot to do this or are we better?

Speaker A:

Instead of spending on that remodel right now, are we better kind of working on that a bit?

Speaker A:

Because I tell you what, working on that is going to be a heck of a lot better than having a project half done and having two people go separate directions because of it.

Speaker A:

So sorry for the not warm and fuzzy one today, guys, but it's one of those things that I want you to think a little bit about.

Speaker A:

And when you're remodeling, communication is the big thing.

Speaker A:

And if someone is having communication problems, that's a problem.

Speaker A:

You want to make sure that that gets under control.

Speaker A:

Maybe you dial that stuff in first and maybe slow your roll on the remodel just a little bit until you get those things fixed first.

Speaker A:

So something, you know, food for thought out there.

Speaker A:

Take a.

Speaker A:

Take a thought about that.

Speaker A:

Is that going to be something that's.

Speaker A:

That's going to help you along, or is this going to be something that's going to be even worse?

Speaker A:

So give it a thought.

Speaker A:

Think about it.

Speaker A:

Might save you some headaches, might save you some attorneys.

Speaker A:

So think about that just a little bit.

Speaker A:

It could be the lifesaver for you and your relationship.

Speaker A:

So think about that one.

Speaker A:

That could be big.

Speaker A:

Well, I hope you guys tuned into last weekend's show.

Speaker A:

That was a lot of fun.

Speaker A:

We had Tony and Corey from Weekend warriors over.

Speaker A:

Sorry for a few audio problems that we had with the.

Speaker A:

That's the thing.

Speaker A:

When you do shows live, sometimes things cut out a little bit.

Speaker A:

We had a little bit of mic clipping issue there with the Champion Homes, but not much we could do about it.

Speaker A:

That's what happens when you do live.

Speaker A:

Sometimes things happen.

Speaker A:

And thanks for listening to that and checking it out.

Speaker A:

And this weekend we've got an amazing show coming up that I can't wait to show.

Speaker A:

You.

Speaker A:

We've got a lot of different stuff this weekend, and it's not all builder show stuff.

Speaker A:

We've got two different things that I'll show you on probably Thursday afternoon and Friday.

Speaker A:

And it's a great show coming up for everybody across the country.

Speaker A:

And we got some design, some building.

Speaker A:

It's a good mix.

Speaker A:

And then, man, it's going to be a great one.

Speaker A:

And then this week, of course, I'm out here in Las Vegas at the National Hardware show talking to people, finding new products, stuff that we can talk about.

Speaker A:

This is not like the builder show.

Speaker A:

The builder show has got everything for inside your home.

Speaker A:

And really this is the stuff.

Speaker A:

This week I get to meet all these people that have inventions.

Speaker A:

It's basically the stuff that goes in your family.

Speaker A:

Neighborhood hardware store.

Speaker A:

So these are the products, the new little inventions, the outdoor barbecue grills.

Speaker A:

You know, it's great hanging out with my friends at Monty McGurl, seeing what they got there, seeing what's out there for garage stuff.

Speaker A:

So we're gonna have a lot of content coming up for that.

Speaker A:

Tons of fun.

Speaker A:

Can't wait to, to show you guys that in the coming weeks.

Speaker A:

So it's a great thing and a lot of new stuff, which is exciting because there's some new solutions that we'll, we'll be talking about that.

Speaker A:

Last year I found so many great things like the IQ vice, my favorite vise for the shop.

Speaker A:

Just a lot of cool little tools.

Speaker A:

And so we'll be exploring that as well.

Speaker A:

All right, well, if you find out, want to find out more about us, head over to aroundthehouse online.com that is our brand new website.

Speaker A:

Take a look over there.

Speaker A:

Lots of new content coming.

Speaker A:

Super excited for that.

Speaker A:

And I'll see you on Saturday.

Speaker A:

Have a great rest.

Speaker A:

Rest of the week, guys.

Speaker A:

I appreciate you.

Speaker A:

Thanks for tuning in to around the House.

Speaker A:
