[00:00:26] Eric Goranson: So what these guys did is they can, they built these blocks and it's a very precise shape that locks into each other when they. So it's really cool. There's just this Morse machine taper where things just basically click together. And so it's no need for any mortar, glue, water, anything like that. This is the biggest innovation for building homes in probably 100 years.
[:[00:00:56] Eric Goranson: When it comes to remodeling and renovating your home, there is a lot to [00:01:00] know. But we've got you covered.

[:[00:01:58] Eric Goranson: I thought we'd talk about some of [00:02:00] my favorite. products that could change how you do projects here in 2024. What are some of the new things out there that are on the horizon that could make that next project so much easier? And this is not sponsored thing. Not a single one of these people are paying for me to do this.
[:[00:02:31] Eric Goranson: And the first one here is an important one. And I really used to hear this last week, put it through its paces and I've done a couple of small projects with it, but. This thing is a game changer. And this is the mud mixer. What is the mud mixer? This thing is absolutely incredible. It is the fastest and easiest multi use mixer on the market.
[:[00:03:20] Eric Goranson: And all you have to do is lift the bag up, break it open in the hopper, and it will kick it out the other end. And so it cuts your workload down by about 50%. And so you don't have to worry about batch mixing, any of that other stuff. You can just start rolling and going. And so if you're a homeowner, this is amazing.
[:[00:04:05] Eric Goranson: And I tell you what, they are heavy duty. They'll take it and just keep going. So it's just absolutely incredible. It's just one of those tools that can change how you do it. So not that you have to go out and buy one if you're a homeowner, but I tell you what, if you are someone out there that really loves.
[:[00:04:43] Eric Goranson: But again, you know, if you're sitting there and your contractor, about 306 bucks, 43 a month. It says with shop pay. So you can do it that way. Ships within one to two business days comes together. Really? This was the winner of the concrete contractor, 2022 top product award. And it's [00:05:00] just a solid piece of equipment.
[:[00:05:19] Eric Goranson: And if you've got water and a plug in, you're good to go. So take a look at mud mixer. This thing is absolutely stunning. I love it. I think it's just a game changer when it comes to doing anything around the house. Now, here's another one here, which this is a new house construction method that's coming from Europe.
[:[00:05:59] Eric Goranson: In the world. [00:06:00] And this is snapped together blocks that uses energy saving and ecological raw materials called per light per light is it's really light. It's really heat resistant. It's really cool. So what these guys did is they can, they built these blocks and it's a very precise shape that locks into each other when they snap together.
[:[00:06:42] Eric Goranson: And here's, what's cool about this that I like is that this stuff shows up in pallets at your job site, you're stacking it together and this eliminates so much. There's no lumber, there's no insulation. You put this stuff together. Cause it's already insulated. It's already engineered. You route out on the inside, almost [00:07:00] like you would like styrofoam, for instance, you route that out.
[:[00:07:28] Eric Goranson: So this is really cool. This is one of those things that they've really designed out for building. And it's impressive, and I think this is going to be a new way to do it. We're seeing these 3D printed homes and stuff out there that I'm not the biggest fan of. I think they're cool, but this could be something A 3D printed house is basically just concrete that's getting squirted out of a machine, and the machine's putting the concrete.
[:[00:08:08] Eric Goranson: I'll put that. If you want to see the video of my interview with this guy, this is really cool stuff. I'll put it up on the, uh, around the house page on around the house online. So you can take a look at it. But I think this is a new way to build. That's going to be so much greener and cost effective. And what I like about it is mold can't grow on this stuff.
[:[00:08:43] Eric Goranson: And I think it's going to be an innovative way to change building. And I think that when you're talking affordable housing and you're talking about Something durable, something inexpensive, but energy efficient. And I do like that. There's no chemicals being off gas. There's none of that stuff. It's an inert [00:09:00] product.
[:[00:09:18] Eric Goranson: And even concepts coming up here for your home. And some of these things like the mud mixer can save you a ton of time and money, especially if you're a contractor or just a homeowner, wanting to tackle your own project. All of a sudden now you don't have to get to worry about getting that concrete truck or hiring a pumper truck out back where if you could get a Bobcat with a pallet of concrete bags, now all of a sudden you can start doing your own concrete work at your pace.
[:[00:10:09] Intro: What's up? This is Sticks It, Inia and Satchel from Steel Panther and you are listening to Around The House with Eric G. Yeah. We love Eric G and you should too.
[:[00:10:55] Eric Goranson: We've been out there for what, 36 years now and growing. So appreciate every one of you tuning in. [00:11:00] If you want to find out more about us or contact me, head over to around the house online. com. And of course we do have a page up on Facebook, which is around the house nation. It is our closed group up there.
[:[00:11:29] Eric Goranson: And here's one that's really cool here. Paper stone. Like what is paper stone? I've been a kitchen, a bath designer for over 30 years and so many products out there, you need to really have a fabricator do it like. Granite, quartz, slab, porcelain, marble. All these things really need to have a fabricator.
[:[00:12:13] Eric Goranson: If you've got good, sharp ones. This will actually work for you really well. And so what is paper stone is a phenolic resin and paper that they have made into a countertop material. Now, the cool thing with this is that it was meant actually when it first started, it was crazy when it first started, it was actually used in both bulkheads.
[:[00:12:53] Eric Goranson: Oh, probably 15 years ago, I had really started using this stuff in some commercial projects when I [00:13:00] was working in a shop in Tacoma and it was really cool. And they have just kept making it better and better. And so what's neat about this stuff. One, it's made fairly close to me. So it's made out here on the West coast.
[:[00:13:38] Eric Goranson: It's beautiful. And they've got a couple of different edges. So they have the solid panel edge, which is a matching. And then they have a cover ply edge, which is cool. That gives you that apple ply look on the edge of it, which is really neat. So I'll tell you what, there's some cool stuff from gun metal to denim.
[:[00:14:18] Eric Goranson: So really it is post consumer recycled paper and old cardboard container paper. And basically they take this paper of layers and press it into stone. And I'm using air quotes here using resin. And they have resin is made from industrial by products would otherwise go into a waste stream. And it gives you this hardwood, like highly workable, non brittle.
[:[00:14:58] Eric Goranson: And let me tell you how I worked with it. [00:15:00] And, uh, I did it for an upcoming segment. So a little teaser here, I wanted to build a countertop for my outdoor kitchen. I had already done the upper countertop out of a, uh, DuPont's porcelain product. So it is their slab porcelain product, which is cool. It's their Endura.
[:[00:15:34] Eric Goranson: So this is like cutting really hard, hardwood. So you need to have a good blade, a good, powerful saw. I went through batteries way quicker than I would. Most other things with this stuff, it was only an inch thick. And then what you do is you basically use their epoxy to epoxy together any seams. And then you can stand it and scuff it.
[:[00:16:11] Eric Goranson: It is a little heavy. So if you have to have it shipped, it's going to add up a little bit, but I'll tell you what, it is awesome. Those slabs are pretty heavy and I needed something too. That was going to be, I built my outdoor kitchen countertops on the work surface there at 30 inches deep. So that turned out pretty good.
[:[00:16:45] Eric Goranson: The stuff you can do, uh, as far as countertops, bar tops, commercial spaces, if you, uh, restaurant tops, this stuff will take it. And that's, what's cool. A lab countertops being made out of it. It is great stuff. So that is just [00:17:00] something to consider. When you're looking at a countertop product. All right, guys.
[:[00:17:31] Eric Goranson: These guys are really trick and it's a project's going to be coming up for me. And these guys are van air design doors. And, uh, when I see a door that will work with your ventilation, that is quieter than a hollow corridor, but we'll let air through, you have my undivided attention. And these guys are super cool with what they're doing.
[:[00:18:10] Eric Goranson: That was my makeup air. That's the air that's coming in to replace what's venting out. And so it keeps that area cold. So this is a great solution for that. If you had a trip trick or tip like this for the show, I'd love to hear it. Head over to around the house online. Send me a message over there and we've got a meshing system where you can drop me a note.
[:[00:19:01] Intro: Ron Keel, the metal cowboy from Keel, the Ron Keel band and Steeler, we are rocking around the house with Eric G.
[:[00:19:29] Eric Goranson: com. And of course, we've got so much information over there. I wanted to give you guys a quick update. I always keep a little bit of an open book here. And I took last week off just to be able to catch some R and R. I have been burning the candle at both ends and I can tell that if I don't stop at some point that I'm going to get sick or I'm going to get hurt.
[:[00:20:01] Eric Goranson: Hopefully no surgery. So I don't think it's going to get in the way of production schedule at all, but just comes to a time when I get tired, I've got to take a little bit of a break to get some R and R to keep myself from getting sick with all the bugs that are going around out there. That's the last thing I need to do is come down with something that's going to make things easier.
[:[00:20:32] Eric Goranson: When the 4th of July ends on a, is on a Thursday because so many people just, Hey, I'm going to take a four day weekend and good for you. Some people can't. But it's always goofy. I'd much rather have it be a Monday or Friday so we can make a, a longer weekend out of it. And many of you are doing that. And my hat's off to you for being able to do that.
[:[00:21:11] Eric Goranson: And one of them here, we talked about a little bit before going to break was van air design. Now these guys make these doors and they're slab doors. And I tell you what, this is the biggest thing to happen to doors. What they did is they created an offset channel in the inside of the door. So think of it looking like it has a, a routed groove out of the door, right?
[:[00:22:01] Eric Goranson: So it's really the best of both worlds how this works. So, from here on out, we've had doors that open and close, right? We'd put a stupid metal grill on the front that looked like it was on the side of an RV, and that was our way of doing it. Or we put in louvers that were considerably harder to take care of and finish and make look right.
[:[00:22:44] Eric Goranson: It also gives you sound privacy. The sound absorbing resonators and acoustic baffles provide this privacy that's similar to a solid door. So really cool how that keeps it quiet. And then you could put whatever size you want, custom sizes, standard. [00:23:00] You can get them instant three eights, instant three quarter.
[:[00:23:31] Eric Goranson: So I think it's something that's really cool to be able to do. On a door system like that. So check it out. If you're looking at replacing doors, you're doing a bathroom model, or you've got a furnace room, maybe you're adding a heat pump, water heater. This could be something that makes a lot of sense to you, especially when you're trying to get ventilation.
[:[00:24:10] Eric Goranson: And you can just start setting and going. And once you get going on it, I tell you what it is money and it's durable. I had a, I had a unfortunate test in our ice storm this last year. So I had branches coming down everywhere. I had one land on my Cedar fence that I have existing. And it karate chopped that thing straight down to the ground, broke the two by fours, busted everything out.
[:[00:24:53] Eric Goranson: As far as going through and basically reflecting noise. So if you're on a, uh, if you're [00:25:00] on a busy street, I think it's really cool to be able to use that and keep the road noise down. I have a bus line that goes out in front of my place. And I tell you what I just don't hear it anymore And so their website if you want to take a look at it is dura bond fencing.
[:[00:25:35] Eric Goranson: And if you look at the video, I did a video on the front of this You On the front of their webpage for them for my show out there. They've got three main colors. They have monument, which I did at my house. They've got Woodland gray, which has a little bit of a green gray to it. And dune, which is a tan khaki color with a little gray to it.
[:[00:26:13] Eric Goranson: So this is really cool as far as how this works. They've got a, a, basically they've got the perfect option here for you. You can contact them, find places in your area and, uh, super tough. And it's something that can last you a lifetime out there. All you need to do to easy maintain, They're fireproof, rotproof, termiteproof.
[:[00:26:45] Eric Goranson: And it has got a super durable coating on it. I love this stuff. I put it at my house and I swear by it because it is tough as nails. So if you're tired of putting up fences, if you've got fences that are blowing down, that are rotting out, if it'll hold up in my weather [00:27:00] here, that's a pretty good solid Thing to say that hey if it'll take the ice, the heat, the trees, the wind, the animals We're looking pretty good.
[:[00:27:34] Eric Goranson: I just put one in my house for this weekend's episode of around the house Northwest. And I tell you what, they've been really patient with me because we ran into some issues that we had to get resolved. Before we tackled these projects, but man, I tell you what, infinity drain is the way to go. Whether you're doing a shower drain or anything else, this is one of those things that can really look good when you're taking a ticket on a project.
[:[00:28:11] Eric Goranson: So take a look at an affinity drain. It is a product that delivers and I tell you what beautiful stainless steel, great finishes. All that stuff looks like a million bucks. So take some time. If you're tackling one of those projects, they made custom one for me. Cause I wanted 20 feet and I want to be able to get that.
[:[00:28:42] Eric Goranson: We've got so much more when we come back after these important messages. Don't go anywhere. We've got a cool one for you.[00:29:00]
[:[00:29:13] Eric Goranson: Welcome back to the Around the House show, the next generation of home improvement. Thanks for joining me today. I'm Eric G. Now our last segment here in the innovative products that could change how you build your projects for 2024.
[:[00:29:47] Eric Goranson: And you know something, when it comes to creating something in your shop like a binge feist, how hard can it be, right? These guys have absolutely reinvented it. Now let's go talk to the guys from IQ vice, because [00:30:00] this thing is stunning. We are at the national hardware show in Las Vegas. Tom Scott, you have the coolest vice system out there that quite frankly, I got to put one in my house with your whole work IQ tools.
[:[00:30:15] Tom Scott: Thank you, Eric. Appreciate it. It's great to be here. We're it's great to be in Vegas and we're having a. Incredible show so far,
[:[00:30:33] Eric Goranson: And then you make something absolutely spectacular.
[:[00:30:48] Tom Scott: Yeah. Yeah. So, and we noticed that when you're working on a vice, a lot of times you have to position your body to wherever the work is. And we said, why can't we design something that allows you to put the work where you need it, where it's in [00:31:00] the optimal position for whatever you're trying to do.
[:[00:31:02] Eric Goranson: Let's put it this way, guys, just to give you a visual. I walked by the booth and they got a bike up on them on, and they got a chainsaw up on it. This is really designed to put anything that your workbench can hold on.
[:[00:31:23] Tom Scott: So I can get a full rotation on that bike without even touching the bench. Same on a chainsaw. I can put it wherever I want and depending on what I'm trying to do.
[:[00:31:39] Eric Goranson: You guys just really came up with such an innovative system that I looked at and went, I'll This is the first time I've seen this and why in 2024 is something this cool finally hitting the workbench?
[:[00:32:01] Tom Scott: And we're very humbled and honored by that, but we really have figured out a different way to work on things. And we have, like you said, a whole system of products that center around the vice that make work easier.
[:[00:32:17] Tom Scott: Yeah. We call it the IQ vice system and it starts with a vice with device. We have five different jaws that you can put on for task specific. projects. We have some that are made specifically for wood, some that are made for crown molding, some that are made for pipe, some that are made for tubing, etc. So there are lots of choices, lots of different things that you can do with the vise.
[:[00:32:54] Tom Scott: Yeah. The, the bare vise has jaws that are metal that you can use without any of the different [00:33:00] accessories that we have. And, but almost all of the other options keep from marring the, the, whatever material you're working on. So I can put it on a bike frame and not scratch it. Or I can work on somebody's chainsaw and not hurt it.
[:[00:33:13] Eric Goranson: And that's the cool thing with this is you can go through and it doesn't matter if you're working on lawn equipment or if you're working on a fine woodworking project, you guys have the system to work with that.
[:[00:33:29] Tom Scott: I also have a 1970 Les, 1972 Les Paul. Oh,
[:[00:33:33] Tom Scott: We have one set of jaws that is covered with leather. So I'm putting that very expensive Les Paul in the, in, in the vice with the leather jaws. And I can position it however I want to change the strings or buff it up or whatever. And I'm not going to scratch it.
[:[00:33:50] Eric Goranson: That's a good last Paul. You don't want to hurt that or mess with frets or anything else on that. It's just too much work to go through and have to fix that stuff. So see, that's awesome. And it doesn't matter what kind of project you're [00:34:00] working on. It makes a lot of sense.
[:[00:34:10] Tom Scott: That's right. It's it's all metal. Some of the parts are cast aluminum. The parts that really take the torque are solid hardened steel. So we can get up to 130 foot pounds of torque with a vise that articulates and rotates 360 degrees.
[:[00:34:25] Eric Goranson: Yeah, I think about when some people have a hard time visualizing what that is, but that's harder. That's more torque than what you're putting on the lug nuts on your car with.
[:[00:34:44] Eric Goranson: I was going to say, yeah, you're going to either rip the bench out of the wall, knock the bench over or just completely destroy the top before you do that. You're not the weak point.
[:[00:34:55] Eric Goranson: neither one of us are, but still it's one of those things that it's, and then you put the leverage on that on top [00:35:00] of that's a lot of torque.
[:[00:35:16] Tom Scott: Yep.
[:[00:35:24] Tom Scott: Yeah. There's so many different directions I can go with that. But speaking of extra hands, we have a, another extension to the system called IQ connect, and it's a series of accessories that are mounted on flexible goosenecks, and they plug right into four ports on the vice or into ports that you can mount around your shop and accessories include a work light.
[:[00:35:58] Eric Goranson: Dude, that is so smart because [00:36:00] how many people out there, and I even do this now, I'll get a new product that shows up at my house that I've never played with before. I'll have this pack of instructions. And I'm sitting there looking at it going, Do I want to read through 12 pages of fine print? Or do I just want to watch the video they made for it?
[:[00:36:25] Eric Goranson: See? There you go. That is the easy way. Because when you're sitting there, it's just so tough to go through those directions.
[:[00:36:40] Tom Scott: you
[:[00:36:41] Tom Scott: Yeah. But with our different mounts, we have one that's magnetic.
[:[00:37:00] Tom Scott: And hold, hold these accessories. So, yeah,
[:[00:37:07] Tom Scott: yeah, we're, we just lost the company in February 1st. So we're pretty new and we're growing rapidly. We've been to true value ACE do it best and Oracle brothers.
[:[00:37:27] Eric Goranson: That's awesome. Yeah. That, and then I sit with Amazon is for people that don't have that hardware store close by where nobody's got it.
[:[00:37:34] Tom Scott: Yeah.
[:[00:37:36] Tom Scott: And the vice is a prime. So if you have prime, it's free shipping and yeah. Oh,
[:[00:37:40] Tom Scott: go. Yeah.
[:[00:37:47] Tom Scott: Yep, exactly, exactly. You're talking about an extra set of hands. I live in Minnesota. I go through two cords of firewood every season. Yeah. And I got tired of buying kindling, so I make my own with the firewood that I've already [00:38:00] split. And I just mount my axe that I sharpened on the vise, by the way, at the perfect angle, upside down in the vise, and I hit it with a two and a half pound hammer, and split logs into kindling.
[:[00:38:18] Eric Goranson: Can I tell you what? I've also tried out those, those, they make those a firewood splitters, but they never work, right? Yeah. Oh yeah.
[:[00:38:41] Eric Goranson: They'll be working out in the shop going. Now I could use it right here cause now I need that extra hand.
[:[00:38:46] Eric Goranson: And that's cool. So man, thanks for coming on today. And again, one more time on the websites, Tom Scott.
[:[00:38:54] Eric Goranson: Tom, thanks for coming on today. This is a lot of fun, man. You guys are killing it.
