Kick Allergies to the Curb: Quick Air Quality Hacks!

Spring has sprung, and with it comes the sneezes and snuffles of allergy season! If you're anything like me, you know that clean indoor air can be a game changer when it comes to surviving the pollen apocalypse. So, I've gathered my top three quick tips to help us all breathe a little easier this spring. First up, make sure that stovetop fan is doing its thing—venting outside, not just blowing hot air back at you! Then, let’s tackle that dust bunny army lurking in our homes; a good spring clean is like giving your air quality a spa day. And lastly, don’t forget about your bathroom fan; it needs to work overtime after those steamy showers. Tune in for all the details and let’s kick those allergens to the curb together!

Spring is here, and with it comes the dreaded allergy season! Eric G dives into three top-notch tips to help you breathe easier indoors, making your space a haven from all that pollen and dust. First up, he emphasizes the importance of your stove's exhaust fan. Seriously, turning that thing on before you even think about cooking is like giving your indoor air quality a high-five! It helps to whisk away all those cooking fumes and potential allergens right out of your home. Think of it as a spa day for your air—let it inhale fresh outdoor vibes, minus the kitchen odors!

Next on the agenda? Spring cleaning! No, not the kind where you shove everything under the bed and call it a day. Eric encourages a thorough decluttering and cleaning routine to combat dust bunnies that have set up camp in your home. He even shares his love for robotic vacuums—because who has time to vacuum when you could be binge-watching your favorite show? Keeping a clean space is like giving your lungs a little spring break from that pesky indoor pollution.

Finally, let’s chat about your bathroom fan. Eric reminds us that it’s not just there for show! Running it after showers helps eliminate moisture, keeping mold at bay. And if your bathroom fan is a relic from the past, it might be time for an upgrade. We're talking about a fan that actually moves air like it means business! So grab a comfy chair, tune in, and let’s clear the air—literally!

Takeaways:

  • Make sure to turn on your kitchen stovetop fan before you start cooking to improve air quality.
  • Cleaning your home regularly not only reduces clutter but also helps minimize dust and allergens.
  • A robust bath fan is essential; run it for at least 20 minutes after showers to reduce humidity.
  • Always check outdoor air quality before opening windows in spring to avoid bringing in allergens.

Speaker C:

Love to see you guys.

Speaker C:

Feel free to send me a message.

Speaker C:

Well, today I wanted to talk about three quick tips for you guys to improve your indoor air quality.

Speaker C:

What can you do to make that indoor air, especially in the springtime, just a little bit more healthy?

Speaker C:

And these are things that you can do around the house that'll just really make things a little easier to breathe.

Speaker C:

And in spring allergy season, it's a good time to deal with that.

Speaker C:

So first on my list, this is going to be the biggest offender of indoor air quality.

Speaker C:

When you're cooking on your stovetop, make sure you turn the fan on and make sure that fan goes all the way outside.

Speaker C:

If it's a recycler that kicks it back in your forehead like I call a forehead duster, those don't work.

Speaker C:

Wasting your time really not going to do a whole lot for you.

Speaker C:

So maybe that's a great springtime DIY project.

Speaker C:

Put in a vent hood that vents all the way to the exterior of the house, up into the attic, out through a sidewall, out to the outside.

Speaker C:

Make that get out of the house because that is your number one problem with indoor air quality.

Speaker C:

So turn it on.

Speaker C:

Turn on before you turn.

Speaker C:

Make a habit of turning that on before you start the stovetop.

Speaker C:

That way you get to, you get it going.

Speaker C:

It doesn't matter if you've got gas, electric induction, just go that route.

Speaker C:

Turn it on first and then afterwards, let it run for 10 or 15 minutes.

Speaker C:

Let that air fully go out of there.

Speaker C:

Because you know, if you've got a pan right there and it's still hot like cast iron, it's still off gassing for, well, 15, 20 minutes.

Speaker C:

So let that run, let that air clean, and you'll be surprised.

Speaker C:

I've really noticed in my house when I don't, you'll get carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, because I have a gas.

Speaker C:

You know, you'll see it go up just even one, just not much, but it'll go up one part per million on the, on the carbon monoxide.

Speaker C:

That makes a difference.

Speaker C:

So make sure you do that.

Speaker C:

Second of all, spend some time cleaning your house.

Speaker C:

You know, clutter is the king of dust.

Speaker C:

And dust is all that air pollution that has fallen out and landed on things.

Speaker C:

Then when you go around, you stir it back up again.

Speaker C:

So the most you can do really is just watch your clutter.

Speaker C:

Keep a clean map, you know, mop and vacuum those floors.

Speaker C:

Get that dialed in.

Speaker C:

Spring cleaning like that is huge.

Speaker C:

I have one of the roborock robotic.

Speaker C:

It's the S8 Max V Ultra.

Speaker C:

I've got two big dogs.

Speaker C:

And I tell you what, that could be massive.

Speaker C:

Massive.

Speaker C:

As far as cleaning gets the pet hair up, you know, it really does a great job.

Speaker C:

And that's a big one.

Speaker C:

And side mark in that cleaning.

Speaker C:

Make sure that you've got a really good air filter in your H vac system and you're good to go.

Speaker C:

Make sure it's dialed in.

Speaker C:

Make sure you're looking good and you'll be set and ready to rock.

Speaker C:

So watch all of those things to make sure that indoor air quality is great there.

Speaker C:

The third one, let's go to the bath fan.

Speaker C:

Make sure you're running that 20 minutes after a shower.

Speaker C:

Make sure that you've got great airflow in there.

Speaker C:

Make sure you got enough air coming into the room.

Speaker C:

You know, if you've got a hundred CFM fan, you need to have 100 CFM coming into that.

Speaker C:

And make sure that thing goes all the way to the exterior of the house.

Speaker C:

So you might want to take a look at making sure you've got that right air coming in.

Speaker C:

And there's great, great doors out there that are vented that you can use.

Speaker C:

You can swap that door out that doesn't have an ugly grill, but there's a lot of great ventilation stuff out there that you can Use that works really well.

Speaker C:

And get a good bath fan.

Speaker C:

If you've got that builder special Bron unit up there.

Speaker C:

And you know, if you've got one of those, those just put out 40 CFM at best.

Speaker C:

And those are always measured at the fan, not at how much, you know, how much air it's moving out of the room when it's hooked up.

Speaker C:

So you can be going 20, 25, you know, literally 25 CFM coming out of that.

Speaker C:

It's crazy.

Speaker C:

That's doing nothing.

Speaker C:

A CFM is a basketball of air.

Speaker C:

So you want to look for something that's giving you a hundred, one hundred ten.

Speaker C:

Move as much air through there you can.

Speaker C:

And if you need a door that's going to look good, take a look at Van Air Design Van Air doors.

Speaker C:

They have those cross ventilated doors that bring air into the room.

Speaker C:

And it'll really change the indoor air quality because you're now getting all that mold, all the chemicals from the hair products, the lotions, the makeup, getting it out of there, the smells from your crazy uncle coming over all that.

Speaker C:

If you put the right fin fan in, that eliminates that quickly.

Speaker C:

No need for the candles and the, and the matches and all that stuff in there.

Speaker C:

It'll just work.

Speaker C:

And it's going to get all those chemicals out of your house.

Speaker C:

So that's a really big deal.

Speaker C:

Now, on a side note, you can jump on Amazon for 50 bucks and get a indoor air quality sensor that works.

Speaker C:

And then you know what's going on in your house.

Speaker C:

And a little sidebar.

Speaker C:

Be careful in the spring, jump online and look at what your indoor air quality is versus your outdoor air quality.

Speaker C:

Sometimes you wide open those windows.

Speaker C:

It is awesome.

Speaker C:

I am excited.

Speaker C:

It's spring, some fresh air, and yeah, that fresh air is filled up with pollen and you're bringing in all these allergens inside your home.

Speaker C:

So jump online, see what's being.

Speaker C:

You know, maybe it's your favorite news station.

Speaker C:

There's a lot of ways you can take a look at that.

Speaker C:

It'll give you pollen counts.

Speaker C:

You can search your indoor, your outdoor air quality right online, see what it is and go, wow, okay, it's beautiful outside.

Speaker C:

It's 72 degrees.

Speaker C:

I want to have that air come in, but it's not great air, so be careful.

Speaker C:

You could be making your indoor air quality worse by bringing that spring air in.

Speaker C:

Especially if you're next to a, a roadway, a business freeway, you could be bringing in way more harmful chemicals or air quality than what you want.

Speaker C:

And Those are my quick tips to make sure, you know, you got the best indoor air quality real quick.

Speaker C:

There's a lot more to that.

Speaker C:

We've done a lot of episodes on that.

Speaker C:

But those are my quick tips right there on getting that going.

Speaker C:

And while you're out there cleaning the windows, clean those window screens.

Speaker C:

If you're a window opener, you like having those things open.

Speaker C:

Those end up being like a filter.

Speaker C:

Clean them up, replace them as needed.

Speaker C:

You'll be looking really good.

Speaker C:

We got a great show coming up this weekend.

Speaker C:

We'll talk more about it, but there's no interviews this weekend.
