Amber Trucke Interview: We dive into her story about her contractor losing his cool and the sledgehammer - Around the House® Home Improvement

Episode 1229

Colorado Contractor Destroys Renovated Bathroom; We talk with Amber Trucke and Jason McDaniel

Many of us saw the headlines.. The Daily Mail showed it as "Moment Colorado contractor takes sledgehammer to newly remodeled bathroom, claiming he wasn't paid" or Yahoo reported the headline as "Footage shows an "angry" contractor with a sledgehammer wrecking a customer's bathroom over a $4,225 payment dispute". The headline really never tells the inside story and if you saw the follow up pictures of the ultra low quality construction you knew there was a massive problem on this jobsite. This low quality work was further destroyed by what everyone saw on the viral video of the contractor swinging the sledgehammer in this womans home and her neighbor filming him. A group of tile contractors and remodeling contractors teamed up with manufacturers to make this wrong right by fixing her shower for free all while showing the right way to do it. We have Jason McDaniel, owner of Stoneman Construction and leader of the Global Tile Posse Facebook Group , William White from Ardex, and the homeowner Amber Trucke in this deep dive into what happened at her house and the feat of this crew to get her that luxury bathroom she had hoped when she hired the origianl contractor.

[00:00:31] Amber Trucke: I'd opened the door and just kind of seeing, okay. They, they put the floor in. Okay. They put the curb in. Um, and I went in there and I just like, I can't even describe the feeling. It was like my, the roads sunk into my stomach, you know, I just, I saw it and I was like, what is this like this isn't what the Pinterest picture looked like.

[:

[00:00:55] Intro: When it comes to remodeling and

[:

[00:01:07] Eric Goranson: Welcome to around the house with Eric G and Caroline B, where we talk home improvement, healthy homes, interior design, every single weekend. Hello Caroline.

[:

[00:01:22] Eric Goranson: story? What a story? We have the most amazing story. It has been all around the world. It has been everywhere. Social media, viral video, everything has been going on with this story and we have it all right here for you today.

[:

[00:01:46] Eric Goranson: an exclusive we too, and this is cool. We're going to get you all the answers because. Let's go back on the way back machine a few weeks ago, where many of us on social media were like, what is happening in the story [00:02:00] started out kind of wrong as a misreporting of the media as contractor repossess his bathroom because of non-payment and that's not what happened at all.

[:

[00:02:43] Eric Goranson: Who is your client uninvited and start swinging this threat sledgehammer in, in a threatening matter, destroying a bathroom.

[:

[00:03:04] Caroline Blazovsky: So insane,

[:

[00:03:28] Caroline Blazovsky: And if you haven't, you have to check out the viral video of this contractor in the bathroom, taking a sledgehammer. And if you

[:

[00:03:45] Jason Mc Daniel: Yeah,

[:

[00:03:46] Eric Goranson: Let's do it first off. We're going to, ah, we're going to go to the top here. We're going to go to Jason McDaniel,

[:

[00:04:03] Eric Goranson: Jason McDaniel brother. Thanks for coming on

[:

[00:04:08] Eric Goranson: And then of course we got our good friend William White from Artex. Absolutely. So anybody out there that has been watching this crazy story out there and you know, I've been in the kitchen and bath design world, uh, for 30 years.

[:

[00:04:53] Eric Goranson: You have been on the fence on this since day one brother, about Amber and her story, you've turned [00:05:00] that turd into a diamond with a lot

[:

[00:05:17] Jason Mc Daniel: And, and so, you know, obviously you see the video in your, I mean, the first time I saw it, I just kind of was like, oh, this is, this is, this can't be real or whatever, you know? And, uh, and so, uh, you know, obviously the, the comments start coming in and then you realize that this is not a joke and this actually happens.

[:

[00:05:56] Jason Mc Daniel: Um, it, it, it, it was interesting cause it hit me hard. Like I [00:06:00] just, I could feel it in my bones. And so I thought, you know, man, maybe I'll call email the radio station. So I did, I, I, or the news station, I emailed KRd and I copied, I think William and, and Aaron and Mark Walsh and some other people thinking if I have some other people paying attention to this, maybe, maybe they'll see something happen.

[:

[00:06:41] Jason Mc Daniel: Um, she wasn't on Facebook and I didn't, I looked around at a couple other things. And so I found her in the most annoying place of all time, which is LinkedIn. And I see these, like I see these LinkedIn things on my email and LinkedIn's always like, oh, come join. And I'm like, [00:07:00] I'm like, I hate you, LinkedIn.

[:

[00:07:26] Jason Mc Daniel: Blah-blah-blah yeah. And I said, I've got a lot of really amazing partners in this industry. I, I can put this bathroom together at no cost to you and, and we can deck it out and do whatever you want. Floor heat, linear drain, squat, whatever. And, uh, so I didn't really expect to hear from her, but five minutes later, she sent me a message back and.

[:

[00:08:11] Jason Mc Daniel: So I got her, I got her to call. And, um, and it was, it was an interesting, there was that I had that feeling inside like, holy crap, this is happening, you know? Um, and she called me and we talked and she was, Amber is a very, very cool person. And, um, you know, she's just a normal person that had a really horrible thing happened to her.

[:

[00:08:35] Eric Goranson: I was jumping on defendant around seven because things are posted up and I'm like, oh, this is the same, Amber, wait a minute. And cause their social media thing is not the same. And so her and I ended up becoming their social media friends that way,

[:

[00:08:50] William White: There was many of the news outlets said that homeowner didn't want to pay. And, and then there was Amber side, which was, she had already. [00:09:00] You know, and she just wanted to see the job that was finished and she wanted the glass to be complete. She, she wanted the job done and she wanted to be able to put eyes on it.

[:

[00:09:31] Jason Mc Daniel: And she said, Hey, send me a receipt. Let me know that to show me that it's ordered and then I'll get home. She knew the work was really bad. She felt like, oh crap, what am I, how am I going to, how am I going to confront them? She was having that feeling. It was just the day of that, that they left, that they're asking for money.

[:

[00:10:05] Jason Mc Daniel: I got to get this money as soon as possible. So then, then, you know, uh, she basically said, I want to see a receipt. And then they backed out of the glass. They said, you know what? We just won't do the glass. We'll pull it out of the contract. And that's when Amber said, look, I gotta get home and we'll evaluate, and we'll talk about the payment.

[:

[00:10:48] Jason Mc Daniel: And I, and I said, I think that's great. I think you should. And I basically said, use me as an outlet. If you have questions, you can call me, I can still try to get the materials provided, you know, I've got connections, so it's all [00:11:00] good. And she said that a couple tile contractors from Colorado were going to come over and, and, and look at the bathroom just in about 30 minutes.

[:

[00:11:29] Jason Mc Daniel: You know? And, and I'm not saying that in a boastful way, I'm just, you know, I put my face on a fricking phone, everything day. So, you know, I'm the idiot. I mean, it's like, it's either embarrassing that they know they know who I am or it's really cool, you know, I can't decide yet. Right. So, um, so yeah, so that's how it happened.

[:

[00:12:03] Jason Mc Daniel: I want to do this. So we made a, we made like a, a pack. We basically said, I said, I guarantee you. Perfection at no cost to you, if you can guarantee me that I'm doing it. And, uh, we made a pact and we actually said, she said, we're on the plane. And, and so every couple of days she would send me a text and it would be like a plane in the air.

[:

[00:12:44] Jason Mc Daniel: And those are the things that, that, that people are never really going to know about this project is, is all of the work it took from Portland to make this thing happen. I mean, it like, it was an everyday thing for a couple of weeks. I had to, I had to line up a general contractor that could get a [00:13:00] permit for the window framing.

[:

[00:13:22] Jason Mc Daniel: Um, so we hit the ground, you know, William and I, uh, William had to sit at the airport and wait for me on Monday, Monday, Monday night, or, yeah. And, uh, and then, you know, we, we, uh, uh, God here, we hit the ground hard on Tuesday and, um, Yeah. I mean, and, and it's, I'm sure you'll have, you know, things you'll want to know about what we've been doing, but that's really how I got here.

[:

[00:14:09] Jason Mc Daniel: So I wanted to do everything I could to get them as much love as possible. And, um, you know, by the time I got here, Amber, I had arranged for her to meet with the tile shop, that all the title was ordered. I gave him the numbers based on seeing the pick, you know, the bathroom in my head. Um, and I can tell you right now, we're pretty much done.

[:

[00:14:33] William White: scary at the same time when you're ordering

[:

[00:14:37] Jason Mc Daniel: Totally. Yeah. So yeah, so we, it, it, I mean, man, like now that it's, uh, I don't even know what day it is. Is it Saturday

[:

[00:14:56] Jason Mc Daniel: Yeah, but you know, Amber had picked out the material, we [00:15:00] kind of came up with the design. I talked to my buddy bill Parker, he got the quick drain and the rapid recess kit, you know, this thing really came together. Um, lot of work, but it came together. We've been hard at it. And we're just about done. So,

[:

[00:15:23] things

[:

[00:15:28] William White: um, about how that shower was

[:

[00:15:32] Eric Goranson: It looked like a drunken eight year old, did it for his first time to me.

[:

[00:15:38] William White: even talking about the tile setting. I'm talking about the structure

[:

[00:15:54] Jason Mc Daniel: It was awful. And, and, you know, there's a part of this that, that we have to be aware of is that [00:16:00] it doesn't make me, I mean, I dislike this guy for bringing a sledgehammer into a female's home. It doesn't matter who it is. Right. It's the fact that, that. Came into a woman's house and was violent. That's the end of the dialogue right there.

[:

[00:16:30] Jason Mc Daniel: These people out there that are siting with him or saying anything about anything, they need to look in the mirror and ask themselves like what insecurities they have to make them say, make themselves say that. So, you know, I mean, it, it this, so if we forget about all that, it makes me sad. It, when I was taking that shower apart, I felt sad that that, that these people.

[:

[00:17:16] Jason Mc Daniel: And. Is a flood test and an, and a floor heat inspection. And we didn't even have to have a floor heat inspection here in Colorado. That is shameful to this trade. There should be an inspector that comes in here and make sure that shower is bomber floor to ceiling, because let me tell you, this house would have been ruined after two, two showers houses done.

[:

[00:17:43] Music: was sheet rock wrapped curves with

[:

[00:17:59] Jason Mc Daniel: They were just [00:18:00] desperate to get, to get some money, right. Got to pay rent. And we also, Amber, last night, we kind of sat here and talked. The other part of this, which is how sad it is that they were so desperate.

[:

[00:18:19] Jason Mc Daniel: These are all really, this is a really good thing to ask. She, she, she reached out to eight people, eight, only three of them called, got in touch with her. Yep. All three bids. One of the, one of them like kicked her dog, which the dog is red out. And, uh, yeah. And, um, and then the, all three, see people are saying, well, you get what you pay for and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

[:

[00:18:59] Jason Mc Daniel: [00:19:00] They did work. The work was bad, but they felt so bad for them that they gave them a good one. The review,

[:

[00:19:13] Jason Mc Daniel: Yeah. And the

[:

[00:19:19] William White: So there's a sense of the wife

[:

[00:19:22] William White: a. Female owned business for a single female. Like there's a sense of

[:

[00:19:40] Caroline Blazovsky: Aren't able to get a business on their own, actually utilizing women as a upon, if you will, to create these women owned businesses. When in fact they're just a shell, the woman, the women owned business doesn't do anything. And this is a major problem with women entrepreneurs. And I've, I didn't learn this recently.

[:

[00:20:00] Jason Mc Daniel: Yeah. I mean, it sucks when, when you hear all the dialogue about how she picked the cheapest and, and look, you know, this is a, this is just a fair home. It's not a, it's not a big, you know, it's, it's got a pretty, it's got a trillion dollar bathroom in it, you know?

[:

[00:20:31] Jason Mc Daniel: She's never had any she's it's her first home. She's never had renovation done and she didn't know, she doesn't, there's no man in the house, a turn or roommate. And, you know, it's, it's just a situation where you have somebody who, you know, isn't all that educated in construction, but why would she be, I'm not educated in what she does for a living, you know?

[:

[00:21:08] Jason Mc Daniel: That does not mean that, that if, you know, even if you hire a CTI, it doesn't mean that person's going to come in and do this phenomenal job. It's it's in here, it's in here. The reason why my work is good is because I feel it in my, in my heart, I feel it in my body when I'm working and, and, um, somebody has to have that much integrity to really pull off a nice install.

[:

[00:21:53] Caroline Blazovsky: all of our listeners who aren't familiar with a CTI.

[:

[00:22:03] Eric Goranson: kitchen. There we go. William's got under his shirt

[:

[00:22:12] Eric Goranson: Well, he's got the lower number, right? So he's got the lower number. So that means he's got to take it just because he's got the lower CTI.

[:

[00:22:24] Eric Goranson: There we go.

[:

[00:22:53] William White: So if you don't know where to look for the information in here, you're never going to find it. And then the second [00:23:00] part is actually a hands-on evaluation where you install. What is virtually a dry floor with a layout of

[:

[00:23:10] William White: that is wet and that is, would be similar to being in a wet application.

[:

[00:23:33] Jason Mc Daniel: Yeah, I think you're probably, it's getting, you know, it's getting to be a little higher at now because of a lot of the photos that are on social media.

[:

[00:24:01] Jason Mc Daniel: Uh, and then, you know, you get those people that say, oh, it doesn't mean anything. And, and, and I mean, honestly the CTI to William and to me, not really that difficult, you know, uh, William and I, we, we think, we think the same, we're thinking so far ahead that I had that. I like this bathroom. I had this bathroom built three weeks ago.

[:

[00:24:33] William White: day before it was even installed, all the cuts were done back wall sidewall, all the cuts were done.

[:

[00:24:39] Jason Mc Daniel: That's, that's kinda what this, you know, with the CTI, you, you gotta be, you know, you, it is a minimum. Let's just get this as a minimum standard. It is a minimum standard. They do have, they do have advanced certification, but the CTI is the bare minimum standard. And, um, here's my opinion. This is just me, in my opinion, if you've been setting [00:25:00] tile for four or five years, if you can't pass the CTI, you shouldn't be in somebody's house in Toronto, you shouldn't.

[:

[00:25:17] Music: three weeks to do a little

[:

[00:25:26] Jason Mc Daniel: What's

[:

[00:25:53] Eric Goranson: Right.

[:

[00:26:14] Jason Mc Daniel: She's such a gamer. She let us do a little Easter egg, which is totally separate. It's just the most it's super rad. Um, so we got a little Easter egg in there. She's got a little floating vanity, so we took it upon ourselves. Uh, Matt capo. Who's great. He, uh, he took it upon himself to do a little Easter egg, so we really didn't.

[:

[00:26:50] Jason Mc Daniel: She did. I mean, she, she helped me like, you know, she helped me with my laundry because I'm here. I mean,

[:

[00:26:58] Jason Mc Daniel: like Amber, [00:27:00] Amber May, and she's had all of these strangers in her house. And let me tell you this house, man, it's not big. And, and, and, and I always say to the guys, don't get too comfortable in anybody's house.

[:

[00:27:29] Jason Mc Daniel: Actually, uh, this morning I felt a little, a little kind of burned out and it, and I, I, I was kinda like, what's wrong with me? Like what, why is this? And then I got a couple messages on my messenger and people, just the outreach of people and the amount of people that have messaged me and just said, dude, like, you know, w we're here for you.

[:

[00:28:20] Jason Mc Daniel: I mean, it's just one of those things that, uh, people say, oh, Jason's in it because he wants the recognition or whatever. And that's not it I'm in this because this'll, this'll keep me wanting to set tile for another couple of years. You know, it'll, it'll, it'll, it'll keep me in the fight for a little bit longer because I need this little bit of energy to, to want to keep going.

[:

[00:28:55] Eric Goranson: walking past the TV yesterday and that would be Friday and I'm looking up there and I [00:29:00] see you guys out there and it was that Colorado story that had been picked up nationally on the follow-up on.

[:

[00:29:14] Jason Mc Daniel: cool. Yeah. It's yeah, it's been fun. I mean, inside edition was here on, on Tuesday and, uh, uh, you know, that was cool. The local news came, I can't remember Wednesday or Thursday. Um, you know, and I've had a lot of people reaching out to me, just, Hey, we saw you in New York, we saw you on the TV and whatever.

[:

[00:29:56] Jason Mc Daniel: Uh,

[:

[00:30:14] Caroline Blazovsky: I mean, she's lucky this is all that happens. I mean, honestly, she could have been in a really, you know, their whole family could

[:

[00:30:20] Eric Goranson: Well, it's funny. I was watching that video and William and I talked about it. I think that day the video came out and I'm like, dude, you see how easy those tiles popped out.

[:

[00:30:46] Caroline Blazovsky: And I saw it. Eric's like, Caroline, look at this. And I'm like, look at that bench like that had no waterproofing.

[:

[00:30:54] Jason Mc Daniel: 12,

[:

[00:31:03] Jason Mc Daniel: Yeah. It was all drywall and there was no real waterproofing per se. Um, there was penetrations through it everywhere. It was all wood. I actually sent a private message to her, to the, to the, the woman that said it.

[:

[00:31:39] Jason Mc Daniel: If you do that, you need us, if you use a single component waterproof, or you need a mill thickness gauge, I just literally all this detail, like what you should have, you know, what you should do. So, um, yeah. I mean, yeah. It's all industry standards. Yeah. So, you know, yeah. Th the, the work was there's no excuse for it.

[:

[00:32:09] Jason Mc Daniel: Oh, here we go. We'll hear that. I'm going to flip it back around. Okay. Here we go. So I'll, uh, I'll take I'm. Oh, amp. Amber is actually, Amber is actually, Amber is home right now. She's she's standing here right now. So, um, so, uh, yeah, so, um, so

[:

[00:32:28] Jason Mc Daniel: do. The floor is covered, but we can pull this.

[:

[00:32:53] Jason Mc Daniel: We, we haven't done any of that. My buddy, Adam who's who's here has been instrumental in getting all of this going as well. Not [00:33:00] just Matt, you know, uh, Jeremy, William and I, Adam came in and did the pocket door. He lined up the Adam gas bar. What's your company name? Creative endeavors. Creative endeavors.

[:

[00:33:32] Jason Mc Daniel: Yeah. So we've got a nice, uh, wood plank. Everything is done at a real high level at the transition. We've done trend line profile there. It's got a scribe in it with some cobble here. Um, this is going to be art X, uh, uh, a Irish cream. We're still waiting for that, William. Uh, and then this has got another color here.

[:

[00:34:18] Jason Mc Daniel: And there's a, there's a four by 12. I did, I did the shower yesterday. All of it is trimmed out. It's all guys. The window, which used to be much bigger. Now it's a smaller window. It's above 60 inches, so it didn't need to be tempered. So there's, there's a window in here that slides, and then there's the floating bench.

[:

[00:34:52] Jason Mc Daniel: So it's, curbless um, we've got the, uh, art, um, wifi floor heat right here. [00:35:00] Um, and then there's going to be a, the soap niche is what I call an infinity niche. So it's the back wall going into the side. We're going to put a shelf here. There's going to be a shelf here. Uh, bottom is course we did the bottom and the matching courts.

[:

[00:35:35] Jason Mc Daniel/: And so I thought, what can we do? That would be really cool. Um, Angie made a Columbine flower, which is the state flower of Colorado, and it's going to be scribed in the back of the dish. Um, really, really cool. So yeah, it's going to be great. So I'll show you the Easter egg. There's going to be a, there's going to be a cabinet over it.

[:

[00:36:05] Eric Goranson: That is awesome. The sledgehammer Easter egg.

[:

[00:36:19] Jason Mc Daniel: Is, uh, it is solid, man. It's super flat. It was done at a very high level. It's got, um, you know, everything was set with art X, X, 78. It's got multiple layers of waterproofing. It's all been flashed all the way around the entire bathroom hundred percent Thai light shower system back here. Uh, you know, it's got art X, S K 1 75.

[:

[00:36:54] Eric Goranson: that'll never come off.

[:

[00:36:58] Jason Mc Daniel: done now. So we'll kind of [00:37:00] see what's going on with the drain and we're still good.

[:

[00:37:06] Music: we got some really great shirts. Oh, don't be the dopey donkeys

[:

[00:37:24] Jason Mc Daniel: That's what that means. Um, so this is where we'll see, this is Matt I'll show you I'll say

[:

[00:37:37] Jason Mc Daniel: three of us with William and then add them back there. He just went. Walked away. He's got another shirt that somebody made, but here let's check this

[:

[00:37:45] Music: This is really cool. Wow. That's amazing.

[:

[00:38:01] Music: is that the shelf

[:

[00:38:10] Music: absolutely epic

[:

[00:38:13] Jason Mc Daniel: So, uh, he's been out here working on this and it's beautiful. So we're just, we're going to install this shortly, just a little bit left and we're going to put this in and, um, you know, it's been, uh, it's been a grind. I mean, it's, it's, it's been fun. We, you know, it takes a minute when you're working around other title mechanics that all.

[:

[00:38:56] Jason Mc Daniel: Um, so yeah, it's been a really great experience, um, [00:39:00] altogether, and Jeremy's been amazing to work with. I mean, you know, I hate to, um, like have such a horrible thing for Amber turned into such a great thing for us, but, uh, you know, it really has been an experience that I'll never forget. That's

[:

[00:39:15] Eric Goranson: Some brands out there and give some, thanks here to the people out there and give them some exposure to, cause I know we've talked about a little bit, but uh, so many people that come together to help all you guys out there. Uh, and it's been awesome. It's been awesome to

[:

[00:39:37] Jason Mc Daniel: And, um, so, and he has been, you know, boots on the ground here in the Springs. He lives in the Springs. Uh, so Jeremy, I mean, you know, none of us would be here without Jeremy Johnson having posted that video. Uh, because I think by the time, if he didn't post it, somebody else would be here and you know what, maybe the same nightmare would be happening.

[:

[00:39:58] Caroline Blazovsky: sure. So how [00:40:00] did, how did the original video get posted? Like, so w who filmed this contractor?

[:

[00:40:19] William White: And. And so the neighbor saw, pull up him, flip off the camera, all that stuff and said, I need to see what that was on. And

[:

[00:40:28] Caroline Blazovsky: and then who posted it on social media? Like who was the, how did it get out or how did this go viral?

[:

[00:40:40] Jason Mc Daniel: I'm pretty sure. Yeah. Yeah. So, so yeah, that's how Jeremy got ahold of it. Um, And so then, you know, obviously Matt, Matt's the next person to, to, to really think because it was those two guys that came to this house, um, first and, uh, and, and to talk to Amber. So, um, you know, Matt has been [00:41:00] instrumental in getting to where we are now.

[:

[00:41:20] Jason Mc Daniel: Um, you know, obviously William, I mean, you know, I've worked with William so many times and, and the amount of work that's been done in such a small, small amount. It's like, it's been, it's such a, it's such a massive amount of work to do and four or five days. Um, and I actually felt, and I'm not just saying.

[:

[00:41:49] Eric Goranson: little applause for William .

[:

[00:42:01] Jason Mc Daniel: So, um, all right, I'm done. And then, you know, uh, Aaron, Aaron, Aaron Chafee with RTX, um, you know, Aaron, he's the one that I call, he's the one that gets the phone call. When, when something happens, he calls Aaron, you know, cause you probably have some other things that are in the works, you know, so yeah, exactly.

[:

[00:42:45] Jason Mc Daniel: I mean, what's going on. So, um, you know, I, I, Aaron has, uh, you know, it's so much deeper than, than, than what anybody will ever know. The things that these guys do for me, it's crazy. I mean, William [00:43:00] lined up a rental car for me. Uh, yesterday, he, he, he, you know, he, he researched, Aaron checked me into my hotel before I got there last night.

[:

[00:43:32] Jason Mc Daniel: So they're there. They don't like to take risks. Um, they, they go the safe route for the Mo for the most part. Um, but I'm pushing that and, and, uh, and they're, they're responding, they're responding, they are responding. I, I do have to kick them in a little bit that they end up getting, you know, they end up nutting up and helping us out.

[:

[00:44:17] Jason Mc Daniel: Cause they were in Portland and I got to be flying around. But um, thank you to ICU. They hooked these. Uh, I mean, hooked them up and, uh, and then Ruby Ruby tools, they, uh, they came through with a, uh, shoot, big old swag pack and S you know, tuning systems and speed magnets. I mean, you know, a lot of few thousand bucks worth of stuff.

[:

[00:45:03] Jason Mc Daniel: Um, and, but bill, he and I kept on bill and, and he got, he made it happen. He had the drain. I asked for some extra pieces, which is just gonna gangster this thing up a little bit more. And then a bill gave me the rapid recess. So thanks to rapid recess for hooking us up there. Got

[:

[00:45:21] Jason Mc Daniel: to use this.

[:

[00:45:34] Music: so Scott, with that

[:

[00:45:55] Jason Mc Daniel: We're shipping then set from Mars. [00:46:00] Um, so yeah, so, you know, been, uh, that's been great. So William helped me out here. Who else, man? So many people have, oh, Steve Steve sells. I do not want to forget about. Contractor here in Colorado Springs. He's the one carrying the permit. I, the amount of the amount of phone calls I had with him before I got here to line up, we had to come.

[:

[00:46:36] Jason Mc Daniel: And, uh, Steve, Steve sees the fan and I'm in there working. And he's like, who bought this fan? And I was like, and he said, dude, you know,

[:

[00:47:16] Jason Mc Daniel: The back wall had a bunch of termite damage on it. Steve was like,

[:

[00:47:20] Jason Mc Daniel: Jason, he came in and Steve. We're not, we're not doing this. William was there. We are taking all of this out. He completely ripped out all the wood on the back wall and reframed all of it, all of it and put it in the window.

[:

[00:47:51] Jason Mc Daniel: Somebody needs to check up on me. Um, so yeah, Steve Steve's been great. Uh, Jeremy, I don't remember Jeremy bourgeois or something Borghese or [00:48:00] something. He's the plumber. He's the plumber. He's rad. He showed up. I don't know the electrician that did that, did the work in here, but thank you to whoever the electrician is.

[:

[00:48:31] Jason Mc Daniel: There are some absolute turds out there and we cannot stop that from happening. Um, and but for the most part, the amount of messages I've gotten have been extremely positive. Uh, thank you to Jim Richards, Jonathan Lewis, there's multiple people sent me money and said, one guy sent me 300 bucks and he's like, Hey dude, I know you're doing this for free.

[:

[00:48:52] William White: well, not even just money cash. We were also getting them more money to go buy lunch. Hey, you [00:49:00] know, guys from across the country or send in money, I want to feed the crew and they would, they would send a couple hundred bucks in Venmo, go get lunch, go get. I want to do this for you. And that happened multiple times.

[:

[00:49:16] Jason Mc Daniel: Yeah. And you know what? That's like, you know, I don't want to take up, I mean, I am taking up all the time, so screw that I guess. But, uh, you know, like there, there's so much more to this. Maybe I'm the guy here right now doing the work, but the entire industry is doing this job. Not just me.

[:

[00:49:57] Jason Mc Daniel: Okay. I set tile [00:50:00] perfectly, no matter what. So it's not really that difficult, but, uh, but you know, it's,

[:

[00:50:32] Jason Mc Daniel: Um, you know, and Amber can kind of shed a little light on, um, how difficult it was to trust people, you know? Um, Amber. Yeah. So, so

[:

[00:50:46] Jason Mc Daniel: phone? We talked to her. Okay. Yeah. Just give me one second. I'm going to take to her. So hold on one second. It's been an hour. I can't hear you right

[:

[00:51:04] Amber Trucke: Yeah, I was going to text you.

[:

[00:51:09] Amber Trucke: Ooh. Oh, the dog, the dog. Okay. Sorry. The dog tried to rip these out of my years. I guess he was mad. Okay. Hi. Hi Caroline.

[:

[00:51:19] Caroline Blazovsky: hosted.

[:

[00:51:22] Eric Goranson: I know guys, of course, you know, this guy and

[:

[00:51:30] Eric Goranson: Tuesday,

[:

[00:51:45] Amber Trucke: I work on Saturdays.

[:

[00:52:03] Amber Trucke: And so it wasn't like we thought they were going to come back and actually do that. Um, but there was some concern that like, she was just being really aggressive and it was kind of, it felt weird. Um, so when my neighbors saw their truck parked at the end of the driveway, they parked it, you know, at the end of the driveway.

[:

[00:52:38] Amber Trucke: She was already on her way over here. Cause my roommate had called her. Um, yeah, they just came in the backyard. My roommate was sitting out on his deck trying to have breakfast and they looked at her and they said, we're here to get our, to get some of our stuff. Wow. And the back door was open. My roommate had left it open for the cat and they just walked in and they just walked in.

[:

[00:52:59] Caroline Blazovsky: Wow. Just [00:53:00] explain to our audience a little bit about what happened. Cause a lot of people, like we got into the story about why they're there, but nobody really talked about exactly what happened. So,

[:

[00:53:19] Amber Trucke: Um, and after like a little over two weeks, you know, on a Thursday, I got home and Jordan, the woman was here and she's like, oh, I finished all the tiling. And I was like, okay, she's like, everything's done. I just got to come back to my out, install the shower heads. Cause I don't have a wrench. So I was like, all right.

[:

[00:54:03] Amber Trucke: Like, this isn't what the picture is, picture

[:

[00:54:28] Caroline Blazovsky: You knew something was wrong. You obviously were like,

[:

[00:54:32] Amber Trucke: And you know, I didn't have the vocabulary I have now, you know, I didn't know about Schluter and edging, whatever, these brown edges. And she literally looked at me and she's like, that's just the unfinished edge of the tile. I was like, okay, okay. Or do something. Make it gray and she's like, well, you wouldn't put ground on that.

[:

[00:55:01] Music: not what

[:

[00:55:21] Amber Trucke: So I don't know if you

[:

[00:55:25] Amber Trucke: the, the little

[:

[00:55:31] Amber Trucke: entire door, they were supposed to hang the door and also, you know, fix the casing to make it look nice. And she told me, well, we never agreed to that. We just said, we'd hang the door. And I'm like, well then why were you digging out of the casing? She's like, oh, well it was rotted.

[:

[00:56:06] Amber Trucke: I'm a little bit disappointed in how things look. And she just kinda looked at me like she was really offended and I'm like, but you know, I get it. You're coming back to smile. You still have some cleanup to do. You got to put the shower heads on, I'll go ahead and finish and I'll see what it looks like.

[:

[00:56:34] Eric Goranson: which is completely not true.

[:

[00:56:44] Amber Trucke: She sent me the final invoice right away for the 42 25. And then a couple of hours later. She's like, can you pay the final invoice? And I was like, um, I'm really sorry. And I don't think I saw those messages, but I posted those messages in my Facebook. I'm like at work, I haven't even been home to see it yet.

[:

[00:57:18] Amber Trucke: I will pay you guys.

[:

[00:57:22] Amber Trucke: arguing with you if that's not okay with you five hours after you guys finished, then you know the courthouses. Um, and then Saturday morning I was messaging her, trying to get proof of this glass panel that they supposedly had ordered a week earlier. Um, and they said it was a back order for like eight weeks and she just would not give me receipts.

[:

[00:58:08] Amber Trucke: And so eventually she sent me a message and said, so are you refusing to pay. And I just responded inside. Do you have proof of this glass wall or panel or not? And the next message I got was we're at your house to repossess our materials and our, our labor.

[:

[00:58:30] Eric Goranson: The abuse kept coming afterwards. I mean, you kept getting horrible messages from these guys afterwards. This was far from over, it's

[:

[00:58:55] Amber Trucke: Can we come talk to you? You know, God. [00:59:00] I don't, I don't mean this to like, be rude to the people who have hired them, but if any of them would have posted the work that they were left with, I got messages from people that have used them telling me like some of the things they've done, some of the things in their house that they ruined.

[:

[00:59:20] Caroline Blazovsky: know? Um, but you know, you're a strong era, strong person. And a lot of these people really just think, oh, this is par for the course. Or if I get something bad, I don't really have any recourse, you know?

[:

[00:59:43]Amber Trucke: for, I don't know. I, my mom was a very strong, independent female for a really long time in my life until she met my stepdad.

[:

[01:00:12] Amber Trucke: At least they're probably going to be really, really, really mad when I do that. So what's the difference. If I do that or I let the entire city know not to hire them so that no one else ever has to go through this again. And I just thought of my thought of my mom and I could, I could like hear my mom's voice if you don't post that video and tell people I'm coming down there.

[:

[01:00:50] Amber Trucke: And I so badly wanted to respond to be like, yeah, I wish you went to be there. Cause you're probably one of the people that referred them to me. Um, but you know, there was other people that said that they [01:01:00] just, they were kind of a gossip and they were kind of scary and they just wanted to pay them and get them out of the house and they hired somebody else to come in and fix stuff.

[:

[01:01:07] Eric Goranson: I know it's sad when people get intimidated and I don't want to speak for them, but I mean, for somebody to be angry and this is my personal opinion for somebody to be angry enough, to walk into a client's house with a sledgehammer and go destroy something when they didn't have permission to be in the house anyway, You can see where the violence tends to creep into their work.

[:

[01:01:41] Amber Trucke: was one person who actually messaged me and said that they screwed up a whole bunch of stuff. And in order to get them to fix that stuff, they promised they wouldn't leave a bad review.

[:

[01:01:54] Caroline Blazovsky: there is

[:

[01:02:14] Amber Trucke: quick to, you know, stand up for myself because this was pretty scary. Um, no, but

[:

[01:02:21] Eric Goranson: know, like, like you and I were talking on social media, chatting back and forth, your tile famous down.

[:

[01:02:37] Music: remember

[:

[01:02:47] Eric Goranson: All right. Well, Amber, thanks for coming on today. And we just killed two birds with one stone because you and I have been chatting, trying to get our schedule together. Cause you have been. Working your butt off at your regular job, having to deal with all these [01:03:00] dudes in your house, getting this put back together.

[:

[01:03:04] Music: star doing this. If you can say,

[:

[01:03:13] Amber Trucke: oh man. Um, I I've been struggling since everyone got here, like a lot. Like I typically, I think I typically tell people, thank you a lot.

[:

[01:03:44] Amber Trucke: And they're at my house, giving me a bathroom. That is way more than what I deserve. And, and, and not because I, you know, no one died in my life. I don't have, you know, some crazy illness. Um, they literally just saw somebody do something that put a [01:04:00] stain on something that they love and something that they're passionate about, and they want it to just wash that stain away and they they're doing it.

[:

[01:04:25] Amber Trucke: It was just here, watch this video. We have to go fix this. So just, I mean, the words, thank you. Sound very redundant to me right now. And they actually feel kind of empty because they don't feel like they really express how grateful I am for, for everybody doing this. And I feel like I'm going to cry. So I'm just gonna say.

[:

[01:05:04]Amber Trucke: hopefully in the future, I'll be the model of someone who knows how to hire

[:

[01:05:14] Music: labor,

[:

[01:05:40] William White: We could not move forward. We couldn't have had our inspections. It would not have happened without Steve and Jason told you about the whole fan bath fan thing. And, and he did that out of the graciousness of his heart. He just said, that's not good enough. And he was, he was marking in to cut this fan in the ceiling [01:06:00] and, you know, um, our floor heat is in, so we're, you know, we've got a piece of protective layer down there to protect the floor and, and Steve was marking.

[:

[01:06:29] William White: And I had this aha moment because what I realized is everybody on this job is a perfectionist. Jason, Matt, Adam, Jeremy. Yep. Steve sells the plumber. The electrician, everybody that's involved with this project is that perfectionist. And I think that because the passion that's in their heart is what makes everybody want to step forward and help out

[:

[01:07:02] Eric Goranson: Yep, absolutely. It is. Well guys,

[:

[01:07:19] Amber Trucke: It's unbelievable to me that everyone would even do this. Um,

[:

[01:07:28] Amber Trucke: are a hundred percent. I mean, I I've said this in the beginning for me personally, this is a God thing. Like, you know, something crappy happened, but I, I always feel like God has my back and in this case just delivered really fast and in a really big it's crazy. So I'm just super thankful. And you know, I, I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out how I can repay everybody and it's just, yeah, these guys are great.

[:

[01:08:00] Eric Goranson: There we go. There we go. All right, well guys, we're going to go out to break here. Thanks for coming on today. Jason, Amber, my brother, William from another mother. Thanks for coming on today, guys. Man, I tell you what, Caroline, that was an amazing discussion with everyone involved there.

[:

[01:08:26] Caroline Blazovsky: Oh my God. Thank you to everyone for coming on. And especially Amber, I mean, for sharing her story and feeling comfortable. Let us, you know, in that piece of our world. And so thank you guys so much for helping her and the story and sharing it with us and our listeners that was kind

[:

[01:08:42] Eric Goranson: We didn't think that Amber was going to be there after work her. And I've been talking about doing something maybe next week on the radio. So, you know, we've been Facebook friends here for a few weeks as this all went down, but, uh, wow. It was cool to be able to just hand over the mic and [01:09:00]

[:

[01:09:04] Caroline Blazovsky: That was crazy. We got to see how amazing it looks.

[:

[01:09:25] Eric Goranson: Our people don't do this. And that to me makes me proud to be in this, you know, residential remodeling and construction industry as a whole

[:

[01:09:48] Caroline Blazovsky: And then you get the bad seed.

[:

[01:10:08] Eric Goranson: And I think there were a lot of lessons there learned by us by her. I mean, I've never seen people giving good reviews to a contractor because they were intimidated,

[:

[01:10:29] Caroline Blazovsky: Or even though they don't like the way it looks, they're afraid to say something. I mean, I don't think it's out of the ordinary. I think it happens more than we realize. No, but if you're,

[:

[01:10:47] Eric Goranson: No doubt. I mean, it's just that simple. It's just that simple, man. This was a great show, Caroline. I'm so happy we could put this together. And, uh, it's something I feel really good about getting the message out there of the real story and not what we've been [01:11:00] seeing in a, in a two-minute TV piece that, uh, has spread around worldwide.

[:

[01:11:09] Eric Goranson: Thank you everyone. Absolutely. Thanks everybody. All right. I'm Eric G and I'm Caroline B and you've been listening to
