Two Million Dollar McMansions and Missing Flashing - What Gives? - Around the House® Home Improvement: A Deep Dive into Your Home

Episode 1967

Two Million Dollar McMansions and Missing Flashing - What Gives?

This week, we’re diving into a hot topic that’s been on my mind since last weekend’s show: why some builders totally miss the mark when it comes to constructing homes. It’s not just about the shiny materials; the real magic (or disaster) happens during installation. I’m talking about how a well-built house with subpar materials can outlast a high-end home that’s poorly put together. We’ll chat about specific products where installation is the unsung hero, like windows, HVAC systems, roofing, and even tile. Plus, I’ll spill some tea from my drive through the neighborhood, where I couldn’t help but notice some serious flashing faux pas. So, buckle up and let’s explore how the right installation can save your dream home from a watery grave!

Dive into the nitty-gritty of home improvement with Eric G. as he takes us on a wild ride through the often overlooked world of construction quality. This episode unpacks the all-too-common scenario of builders skimping on essential installation practices, especially in high-dollar homes. Picture this: a brand new McMansion going up on a prime waterfront lot, yet the details are as flimsy as a paper towel. Eric passionately highlights the importance of proper flashing around windows and doors, revealing how a few hours of diligent work could save future homeowners from costly repairs down the line. Not to mention, he shares insights on the vital role of independent inspectors in the building process—because who wants to discover their dream home is built with 1995 technology? The conversation is both engaging and enlightening, making it clear that in home improvement, the devil is in the details. So whether you’re a DIY diva or just a curious listener, this episode is a must-listen to avoid getting hoodwinked by shoddy workmanship.

Takeaways:

  • Eric G shares insights from last weekend's show and highlights the importance of quality installations in home building.
  • He discusses how builders can sometimes cut corners, leading to potentially costly issues down the line for homeowners.
  • The episode emphasizes that sometimes the installation quality is more crucial than the material grade when it comes to windows, doors, and roofing.
  • Listeners are encouraged to consider hiring independent inspectors during the home building process to ensure everything is up to modern standards.

Speaker A:

Welcome to the around the House show, the next generation of home improvement.

Speaker A:

I'm Eric G.

Speaker A:

Thanks for joining me today.

Speaker A:

This is our midweek update.

Speaker A:

This is the stuff.

Speaker A:

Of course, it didn't make it into last weekend's show and isn't going to make it into this weekend show.

Speaker A:

And I wanted to talk about a few different things.

Speaker A:

First off, this is always brought to you by our friends at Monument Grills.

Speaker A:

Check them out@monument grills.com well, today I wanted to talk about a few things.

Speaker A:

I wanted to do a quick follow up over last weekend show.

Speaker A:

And I tell you what, that one was a little controversial, but I love it.

Speaker A:

We've had a lot of people tuning in, even new people tuning in.

Speaker A:

And I really wanted to help out those inventors, those people that I see every year at the National Hardware show, the people that create things for your homes and the battles that they have trying to get those dreams, those products.

Speaker A:

They said if only I could have something that would do this.

Speaker A:

We all have thought about ways people have invented stuff and you know, the thing is, is these people fight a big battle and I want to help those people out.

Speaker A:

So I thought, you know, so let's jump in and talk about the flippy pill a little bit.

Speaker A:

And that really took off this weekend.

Speaker A:

So I really enjoyed it.

Speaker A:

If you missed that episode, take a look at it.

Speaker A:

I had a lot of great comments.

Speaker A:

I had one comment that said that, you know, it was too negative, but you know something, sometimes life is negative.

Speaker A:

We always try to stay positive here on around the House show.

Speaker A:

But you know something, this is something that when we tell a story, I don't try to put the positive spin on it.

Speaker A:

I want to tell the story.

Speaker A:

And we told that story.

Speaker A:

Now I know there's a bunch going on with it and there'll probably be an update in the future.

Speaker A:

But for now, Juliet Facet is out there, you know, being the, you know, female owned, business owner, inventor, taking on these big huge companies that had, you know, as she said, taken her patents, copied them and made millions off it.

Speaker A:

So I like to be able to support people like that and tell a story that can go out and, you know, give you Some things to learn from if you're going to invent something or if you've got family members.

Speaker A:

This is just an interesting one in consumer products, consumer sales and how stuff goes to market.

Speaker A:

So take a look at that one on the podcast.

Speaker A:

s, let's see, that is episode:

Speaker A:

So you can take a look at that on your favorite podcast player.

Speaker A:

And that was a fun one.

Speaker A:

Well, today I wanted to talk about something and it's, and it's being reminded by my drive down the road in front of my house.

Speaker A:

So we have in my neighborhood builders that are coming in, buying up the houses and taking a four, five, six, not really four, five, six, seven thousand dollar house, tearing them down and putting a two million dollar house on it.

Speaker A:

Now this one was probably the most deserving of all of them because it was just a mid century home that was not a good mid century home and it had an addition or it was just poorly designed, was not pretty.

Speaker A:

So they're putting a big, you know what they call McMansion on it and I get it, it's waterfront though.

Speaker A:

It's down the street, it's on the lake.

Speaker A:

One of the best pieces of property out there.

Speaker A:

But the problem is as I'm watching them build it and you know how this goes, that builder has missed flashing day and they're doing the absolute minimum around the windows, doors going in.

Speaker A:

I can see it, I drive past it.

Speaker A:

They got two different types of Tyvek wrap.

Speaker A:

They have a builder version and they have a, you know, they're just stapling around the windows.

Speaker A:

They're not doing any of the flexible flashings that I would recommend.

Speaker A:

That is current technology.

Speaker A:

ws are getting done like it's:

Speaker A:

million dollar house that has:

Speaker A:

I don't see any tape in that thing at all.

Speaker A:

They've cut out little pieces, wrapped the windows and then what they'll do is they'll just staple up more around the house of the house wrap.

Speaker A:

They're not going to tape anything.

Speaker A:

I've seen this happen down the road last year and it's really sad to see that because an extra couple hours of work and that house would have been flashed correctly and it would have been built correctly.

Speaker A:

But what I'm seeing over there, I'll take some pictures, I'll run over there today and I'll put it up on around the house online.com actually I'll put it on Facebook, that'll be the best.

Speaker A:

I'll put it up on Facebook and go, huh, missing flashing day.

Speaker A:

Please comment.

Speaker A:

And you can see that.

Speaker A:

So take a look at that a little bit later today on Wednesday.

Speaker A:

But that really reminded me of what I'm seeing out there.

Speaker A:

If you're building a new house, please pay an independent inspector.

Speaker A:

It's not going to cost you that much to go through and look at rough in foundation, pre drywall, post drywall.

Speaker A:

Pay the expert to walk around and make sure that everything is done correctly and make sure those steps for that inspector are part of the process.

Speaker A:

Because building code doesn't cover a lot of this.

Speaker A:

Building code really fails on keeping up with technology and you want this stuff done right so you're not back in there seven years later tearing out windows and doors, putting them in, around putting them in the right way.

Speaker A:

So take the time to do that now.

Speaker A:

There are a few things I can think of three offhand and please comment when I post this up on our Facebook around the house.

Speaker A:

Take a look at this because I want to get your take.

Speaker A:

There are three things that come to mind that are when you buy a high quality product that the installation is almost more important than the product itself.

Speaker A:

That's going to be windows and doors.

Speaker A:

You can buy the most beautiful windows and doors and if you didn't flash it correctly in most of the country, you will have so much damage that those windows and doors will not be operating correctly.

Speaker A:

You didn't flash it right.

Speaker A:

So water and moisture is getting around, air getting around, so they're leaking.

Speaker A:

The next one that I have is your H vac system.

Speaker A:

You can buy a bottom of the line system which is still good.

Speaker A:

Have it installed correctly and it's going to work great.

Speaker A:

You can buy a top of the line system, all the latest, greatest, and they didn't size it correctly, they didn't install it correctly and it's a garbage system.

Speaker A:

The other one I have is roofing.

Speaker A:

You can buy the highest quality roof and if that roofer doesn't know what's going on, it doesn't matter.

Speaker A:

So jump over on our Facebook page and take a look.

Speaker A:

Comment on this.

Speaker A:

What is, what are the things that you're thinking about out there that the install is almost more important?

Speaker A:

And I'll put one more over here.

Speaker A:

Tile.

Speaker A:

Tile is another one of those where the install is more important than the tile itself.

Speaker A:

So think about that a little bit.

Speaker A:

What do you think about that?

Speaker A:

So feel free to make a comment over at our Facebook page.
