Under the Weather but On the Air: Eric Dishes on DIY Dangers
Things are looking a bit shaky out there in the world of construction and home improvement, friends! Eric G. is back, despite battling a pesky cold, and he's diving into the current economic struggle faced by many contractors and retailers. It seems like folks are more focused on sprucing up their spaces with some light maintenance instead of diving headfirst into those big renovation projects—y'know, the kind that puts a smile on every contractor's face. But hold onto your hard hats, because Eric's also got the latest scoop on product recalls that could seriously ruin your day, like those sneaky food cookers that might just have a burning desire to cause chaos. So, grab your coffee and settle in as we dissect the highs and lows of home improvement in today's mid-week update!
Feeling a bit rough around the edges, Eric G. decides to push through the sniffles and bring us some juicy mid-week updates that we didn't know we needed. The construction and home improvement industries are facing some tough times, and Eric's here to spill the tea on what's happening. With companies feeling the pinch, it seems like everyone is buying the little things – bark, mulch, and flowers – to keep their homes looking nice instead of diving into those big renovation projects. It’s like we’re all playing a game of ‘let’s keep things semi-functional’ rather than going all out. Eric warns us to watch out for the contractors who might be on shaky ground, reminding us to do our homework before hiring anyone. After all, you don’t want your dream project funded by someone else’s financial woes!
Takeaways:
- In this economy, many construction companies are feeling the heat and struggling with reduced business, so it's a bit of a tightrope walk right now for them.
- Eric warns us to be cautious when hiring contractors during these tough times; check their experience and reputation to avoid surprises.
- The recent product recall list includes some major players, like Shark Ninja pressure cookers, which could pose serious burn hazards—definitely something to be aware of!
- Lowe's has reported that while they are doing okay, the overall trend in home improvement suggests that consumers are opting for maintenance over big projects, which affects contractors.
- With the economy fluctuating, it's essential to keep an eye on the home improvement market, as many businesses are experiencing a slowdown reminiscent of the 2008 crash.
- If you own any recalled products, like the Igloo coolers or Delta gas valves, it’s time to check those out and make sure your home is safe from potential hazards!

Speaker A:This is the show that we put on that well talks about the stuff that didn't make it into last week's show and didn't make it into this weekend show.
Speaker A:And this hour is brought to you by our friends at Monument Grills.
Speaker A:If you're looking for that brand new barbecue, you could probably get it if you order it today just in time for Memorial Day.

Speaker A:I'm going to put together here.
Speaker A:I can't wait to cook on this thing.
Speaker A:It's going to be so much fun.
Speaker A:Just right in time for Memorial Day weekend.
Speaker A:I can't wait to use that new smart barbecue grill.
Speaker A:As you can tell, my voice is pretty hammered.
Speaker A:I've been fighting a cold this week.
Speaker A:None of the COVID or the Ronies, so that's good.
Speaker A:But just fighting that bad cold which is no fun.
Speaker A:So we're going to have a best of show this weekend.
Speaker A:I wanted to rest my voice up just so I could get this out to you today.
Speaker A:And it's been a little tough one, but it's been a while since I've had one of these and finally caught up with me.
Speaker A:Probably burning the candle at both ends will do it for me.
Speaker A:We've got a lot going on and I wanted to today to talk a little bit about the economy of what's going out there that I'm seeing in home improvement.
Speaker A:Lowe's came out this morning with their earnings report that they were up.
Speaker A:They're looking okay.
Speaker A:Here's what we're seeing out there with builders, remodelers, construction companies, retailers across the country.
Speaker A:There are hotspots could be in the area that you are.
Speaker A:But overall many businesses right now are feeling a crunch.
Speaker A:It's kind of like the slow crash of 08 or it's a slow motion crash that we've seen going on out there.
Speaker A:People are going into Lowe's, Home Depot, they're buying the bark, the mulch, buying the flowers Making their house look good.
Speaker A:Are they doing big home improvement projects?
Speaker A:Most are not.
Speaker A:You are seeing people out there doing a lot of maintaining right now, keeping things going, kicking the can down the road.
Speaker A:They're not doing big investments back in their house.
Speaker A:So this is one of those things that's really making it a little more difficult for the retailers.
Speaker A:So you're seeing, you know that on the short term is good.
Speaker A:But the contractors out there, many of the remodeling contractors, are sweating it going.
Speaker A:Those big projects that we were doing last year aren't happening this year.
Speaker A:So be really careful out there.
Speaker A:There's a lot of people out there that have learned.
Speaker A:There's a lot of people out there that tend to go out of business every five to 12 years.
Speaker A:Those are the ones you gotta be careful of.
Speaker A:So make sure that you're hiring those contractors correctly.
Speaker A:Make sure you're getting the good ones that have been around a while.
Speaker A:So go back and listen to one of our episodes here of different.
Speaker A:We've got a couple different episodes we've done recently that were on how to hire a contractor.
Speaker A:All those things, it's more important now than ever because you want to make sure that you're not just kicking these guys down the curb just to be able to get in business for another week or two.
Speaker A:And your project is paying for the last project to get finished and so forth.
Speaker A:So it's like a big game of musical chairs I want you to be careful with out there.
Speaker A:There's a lot of great contractors, but right now they're under a lot of stress of reduced business and they've been really downsizing a little bit due to these big projects.
Speaker A:Now, like I said, there's some areas that are just rocking and rolling.
Speaker A:There's a lot of areas are not.
Speaker A:So be really careful guys out there with what you.
Speaker A:Next up, I wanted to talk about some of our recalls that we see out there.
Speaker A:I find these@cpsc.gov recalls.
Speaker A:Not a lot of stuff on here now, but some of the stuff that we see that's interesting, we get into Delta gas ball valves recall due to fire and burn hazard.
Speaker A:Made by Moscow Canada.
Speaker A:So about 3, 700 in US and 18,500 sold in Canada.
Speaker A:Igloo expands recall of 90 quart rolling coolers due to fingertip amputation and crushing hazards.
Speaker A:About 1.2 million of those out there.
Speaker A:San Ven Technology recalls Vivore cable railing kits due to entrapment hazard.
Speaker A:So many, there's only 800 of those.
Speaker A:Now.
Speaker A:The other one here That's a big one.
Speaker A:Shark Ninja recalls 1.8 million food Foodie multifunction pressure cookers due to burn hazard.
Speaker A:So you gotta stop using those.
Speaker A:There's about 1.8 million of those out there.
Speaker A:184,000 in Canada.
Speaker A:So if you've got the Shark Ninja foodie multifunction pressure cook cooker, be very careful.
Speaker A:That's a bad one.
Speaker A:Kubota Tractor Corporation recalls RTV series utility vehicles due to crash hazard.
Speaker A:And that's most of them here.
Speaker A:Some of these are not shocking.
Speaker A:Some blinds from Shine that were only about 545.
Speaker A:Not many people went onto that fast fashion brand and bought home improvement products and I don't blame them.
Speaker A:And the rest of them really are a lot of different little small battery chargers and things like that.
Speaker A:So we're not talking a lot of stuff right there.
Speaker A:I think the only last one that I see here is Jonas C.
Speaker A:Recalls long haul portable ATV fuel containers due to risk of injury or death from burn, fire poisoning hazards.
Speaker A:So pretty light on the recalls right now.
Speaker A:Not too bad out there.
Speaker A:To find out more information about those, head over to CPSC.gov recalls I'm going to keep this one short today, guys.
Speaker A:I am losing my voice and I've got more to do today.
Speaker A:Been trying to get the TV show wrapped up.
Speaker A:We have got some changes to that coming up.
Speaker A:We'll announce at a future date and we'll.
Speaker A:You'll see those announcements here of course and on aroundthe house online dot com.
Speaker A:But we got a great show coming up this weekend.
Speaker A:I can't wait to show you that one.
Speaker A:I'm Eric G.
Speaker A:Thanks for tuning in guys.
Speaker A:I'm gonna go rest up my voice, get back to some better health, see if I can do something here to get this back on track.
