design and Construction Week:

Speaker C:

This type of media, the podcast where it's like, where else are people going to hear this type of stuff until you've done it wrong?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And then you paid for it.

Speaker C:

Now you're like expert, then you know, but like, this is where you get that.

Speaker C:

Listen to stuff like this and you just learn and absorb so many things that you might not know it even existed.

Speaker A:

Research, ask questions, talk to friends.

Speaker A:

What worked, what didn't work, what would you do different on your next install, your next project, your next remodel this.

Speaker B:

Hour is brought to you by my friends at Monument Grills.

Speaker B:

Know and we have got you covered.

Speaker A:

This is around the house.

Speaker B:

Welcome to the round the house show, the next generation of home improvement.

Speaker B:

Gentlemen, thanks for joining me today.

Speaker B:

We are out here at one of the most amazing events in the world for kitchen and bath.

Speaker B:

Anything inside your house, whether you're looking at H vac or the most beautiful tile in the world.

Speaker B:

And speaking of that, we are over here in dal tile with two of my favorite people.

Speaker B:

Patrick, let's start out with you first and we'll get to Chip in a second, but let's introduce you.

Speaker B:

Thanks for coming on around the house.

Speaker A:

I appreciate you everybody being here.

Speaker A:

This is fantastic.

Speaker A:

How about this show?

Speaker A:

Is this unbelievable?

Speaker B:

There are so many people here.

Speaker A:

Oh, my gosh.

Speaker A:

Over a hundred thousand.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker A:

One hundred thousand.

Speaker A:

My name is Patrick Warren.

Speaker A:

I'm vice president of dealer and showroom sales here at Del tile.

Speaker A:

And the key part of that business right now for us is the kitchen to bath.

Speaker A:

So it's great for us to be here.

Speaker A:

We can talk about that a little bit.

Speaker A:

Oh, my gosh, what a fantastic show it's been.

Speaker B:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker B:

And of course, my buddy Chip Wade.

Speaker C:

It's always good being here with you, Eric.

Speaker B:

We had fun.

Speaker C:

We have a great time and it's fun to see all of the newest stuff.

Speaker C:

This is why I love coming to Vegas.

Speaker C:

It's not what you would think.

Speaker C:

It is this show.

Speaker C:

This is my favorite show of the year.

Speaker C:

It's where I get inspired more than anywhere else and I just walk my legs off.

Speaker C:

We were just talking before we came on about how it's hurting in my hips amount of miles that we're putting on.

Speaker C:

So I don't know what that means.

Speaker C:

I guess we're getting on.

Speaker B:

I have to thank the Tesla tunnel load.

Speaker B:

It has saved me about six or seven miles a day of walking between all the different halls.

Speaker C:

Well, there's construction going on at the convention center.

Speaker C:

It's across the west hall, the north hall, the central hall, the south, up and down.

Speaker C:

There's a lot.

Speaker C:

And what is that?

Speaker C:

20% of.

Speaker C:

20% up in attendance.

Speaker A:

So you said 100,000 over 100,000.

Speaker C:

That's absolutely amazing.

Speaker C:

But again, this show is unbelievable.

Speaker C:

And where we're sitting right now has to be the greatest vista at the show.

Speaker B:

Oh, my gosh.

Speaker C:

So thank you for meeting here.

Speaker C:

This is wonderful scenery.

Speaker A:

This is the best.

Speaker A:

Doesn't get any better than this.

Speaker B:

So we're guys to paint the picture.

Speaker B:

We're in this beautiful Daltow booth here.

Speaker B:

And it has all the colors, the textures.

Speaker B:

If you wanted to know what's going to be here next year.

Speaker B:

That's hot.

Speaker B:

It's in this booth.

Speaker A:

That's exactly right.

Speaker A:

That's exactly right.

Speaker A:

So if you look at what we do, why we come to KBIS and the builder show in one is, what we want to do is we want to give you an introduction to what we see for our brands.

Speaker A:

Daltile, Overarch.

Speaker A:

We have three core brands.

Speaker A:

Daltile Marazi and American Oleanne.

Speaker A:

And those brands represent different types of trends, styles, and different products.

Speaker A:

We put it all together so that whatever, whoever's coming into that space, whether it's a commercial developer, a builder, a homeowner, a designer, they're gonna be able to paint that picture with our products so they can build that perfect space.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And it's gorgeous.

Speaker B:

And there's a lot of.

Speaker B:

Outside of the gorgeous part of it, there's a lot of safety, too.

Speaker B:

Cause you have to have the right floor tile for things.

Speaker B:

Everybody has made that mistake.

Speaker B:

Or walked into somebody's house where they put the polished marble in the bathroom.

Speaker B:

And the first time you walk out, it's like you're walking across the wet ice and you're looking for the Zamboni.

Speaker B:

Cause someone's gonna die in this bathroom and you gotta do it right.

Speaker B:

Other it's a problem.

Speaker A:

Or you become the Zamboni.

Speaker B:

Exactly.

Speaker C:

Just drop a little liquid drizzle.

Speaker C:

Garage squeegee.

Speaker A:

Driveway's clean.

Speaker C:

Oh, my gosh.

Speaker C:

As a.

Speaker C:

As somebody that does a lot of projects, I'm always really wanting to.

Speaker C:

Inspiration is too much of a broad word.

Speaker C:

I like to See and be attracted to visuals that kind of get me started in my process.

Speaker C:

I'm a very collaborative designer and creative, and so seeing visuals, and I think a lot of people are this way.

Speaker C:

And that is another thing that happens at the show, specifically in this booth, is seeing pairings of product together that spark a lot of excitement and get you from, okay, I got a project going on to.

Speaker C:

I don't know where I'm going to use that, but I'm going to use it somewhere.

Speaker C:

And that times 10 really gets you down the path.

Speaker C:

And your curated collection, you have some boards over here that are absolutely unbelievable.

Speaker C:

I think they're on the Dal Tile website as well.

Speaker A:

They are curations, all three websites.

Speaker C:

So imagine seeing imagery where you see inspiration imagery.

Speaker C:

You see countertop selection, wall tile selection, and different accents paired with stuff that you might not think to even get at all.

Speaker C:

Absolutely.

Speaker C:

And you're like, that just so works.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And I'm excited to use it.

Speaker C:

And so I'm already like, I'm going to be here for three hours probably after this interview, selecting some different things.

Speaker B:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker B:

Last year, Julie, my wife, and I walked in last year, saw the floor last year, and we're like, that's going in the house.

Speaker B:

Yeah, that's.

Speaker A:

We just both looked at it.

Speaker B:

And the cool thing, though, is, with you guys as well, is that it's one thing to look at a piece of tile.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

Or a collection or a small piece of mosaics, but when you see it in the larger format of how it all goes together, because you'll go, oh, there's some circles.

Speaker B:

But then maybe you don't realize that little curve in there is much bigger piece that now expands out into a pattern that's three or four feet wide.

Speaker A:

Absolutely.

Speaker A:

That's why we do the curation.

Speaker A:

If you look, there's a lot of product.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And we feed that monster all the time.

Speaker A:

We want as much product as possible.

Speaker A:

People don't know how to put it all together.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And a lot of times they're going into locations to look at tile in its one dimension.

Speaker A:

Here's the floor.

Speaker A:

Here's the wall.

Speaker A:

But you have to look at the whole package, how it goes together, and we can help them be a little risky.

Speaker A:

It's that mannequin sales process that helps them put it all together and say, you know what?

Speaker A:

I can put those three products together and it's gonna look amazing.

Speaker C:

I knew you were gonna talk about me at some point, Pat.

Speaker C:

That was smooth.

Speaker C:

That was smooth.

Speaker B:

I wasn't expecting that was as smooth as the top of your forehead there, brother.

Speaker C:

There's a lot of new stuff that you guys have in the booth this year, which is really cool.

Speaker C:

I noticed that there's a new three dimensional technology on some of the porcelain tile, which, by the way, porcelain is just basically, it's just taking over porcelain as a material, as somebody that builds and installs, but also designs.

Speaker C:

It's superior in almost every way.

Speaker B:

It is.

Speaker C:

And I love that.

Speaker C:

The technology, of course, you all have massive slabs, but even some of this new 3D technology has imprinting on the surface.

Speaker C:

Where we've seen over the past five to 10 years, the technology for the visuals on the tile have exploded.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker C:

But now we're getting 3D effects like veining that actually you rub your finger across it or you look at it on the wall and you see the light go in and out of the.

Speaker C:

So it's the shadow.

Speaker C:

It just feels.

Speaker C:

It gives you all the right feels across the board.

Speaker B:

If you look at it and then you look at the real stone and you think that's fake because that looks more real than the stone does, 100%, which it used to be.

Speaker B:

The other way you go, oh, that's why that almost looks.

Speaker B:

And now you're looking at the porcelain going, the stone almost looks as good.

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

You're making it look better than the actual product.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And the larger format technology is getting to 24 by 48 inch tiles that are super flat.

Speaker B:

That's the new 12 by 24.

Speaker B:

Let's be honest.

Speaker A:

It is.

Speaker C:

It is.

Speaker C:

Seriously, what is the market for the 12 by 12 tile now?

Speaker C:

I still like it and use it, but it's a very specific silo that I pick.

Speaker C:

Like, how much of that are you seeing in the market?

Speaker A:

So I would say the actual square market.

Speaker A:

Let's look at this.

Speaker A:

The shape of product.

Speaker A:

People are starting to go away from that rectangle.

Speaker A:

12 by 24 is over.

Speaker A:

It's overpopulated in the marketplace.

Speaker A:

So now we're seeing the squares come back and it adds.

Speaker A:

Like, you can almost tell rooms dated a little bit by the fact that it's got a rectangular floor.

Speaker A:

12 by 24.

Speaker A:

But now we get into 24 by 48, 48 by 48, 30 by 30s.

Speaker A:

It just.

Speaker A:

It adds that wow factor.

Speaker A:

That looks like that natural stone product that they're looking for.

Speaker C:

Amazing.

Speaker B:

And it's cool because you get that look again.

Speaker A:

That's right.

Speaker B:

But the maintenance is so much easier too, because one, you don't have a natural product down There that you've got to go clean, seal.

Speaker B:

And then, of course, less grout and.

Speaker B:

Oh.

Speaker B:

And then when you heat it.

Speaker B:

Oh, my gosh.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker C:

So I have that.

Speaker C:

I brought this pamphlet over because I'm so excited about what you guys are doing.

Speaker A:

How cool is that?

Speaker C:

So porcelain tile.

Speaker C:

Now, it's not just resiliency, durability, beauty, just long lasting.

Speaker C:

It also has these, like, side effects of interesting options for things like invisiquich.

Speaker C:

If you've never seen these, like, imagine induction cooktops that are proliferating through the porcelain slab so it's invisible.

Speaker C:

So you have a seamless countertop.

Speaker C:

Nothing to catch debris to worry with.

Speaker C:

And literally the pot goes on the porcelain slab and all of the action is happening invisibly underneath.

Speaker C:

Unbelievable.

Speaker A:

Unbelievable.

Speaker A:

I had somebody yesterday tell me and I didn't think about it.

Speaker A:

She was saying, I'm going to put this in my island at home in Dallas because my grandkids won't burn their fingers when they're watching me cook.

Speaker A:

Interesting side.

Speaker C:

That's.

Speaker B:

And the thing is, we've all cleaned around a cooktop.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker B:

And unless you have toothpicks to get into the little groove to get all the stuff that came out, they're impossible to keep clean.

Speaker B:

Now you've got a slab porcelain on there.

Speaker B:

That one.

Speaker B:

With that, you could literally start barbecue briquettes on it if you had it outside and barbecue on the thing and not hurt it and wipe it off with a wet cloth.

Speaker A:

It's not new technology, but it's amazing how they put it all together.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

This.

Speaker C:

I think the first time I saw folks playing with this was probably four or five years ago.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And it was intriguing, but it didn't seem like, it's like one of those things like, hey, this thing hadn't been vetted quite enough.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker C:

But I think we're fully mature in the technology now.

Speaker C:

But to your point, the porcelain, like, you can't do this on granite.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker C:

You can't really do this on natural stone because the temperature gets so high, the inclusions in the vein, it'll crack.

Speaker C:

And crack.

Speaker B:

You're going to.

Speaker C:

Porcelain is a magic material for this.

Speaker B:

It is.

Speaker B:

I use porcelain in my outdoor kitchen.

Speaker B:

What?

Speaker B:

Not a better product.

Speaker B:

Outside, it's the perfect product.

Speaker B:

Before I built the COVID over it, I could have 2 inches of ice on it from an ice storm.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker B:

And I got pictures of mine in that way.

Speaker B:

And then six months later, it's 110 degrees outside and it doesn't care.

Speaker C:

Eric.

Speaker C:

I was at the one of the Dow Tal design centers in my hometown of Atlanta the other day, they have a big, huge stone center, which, again, it just makes me happy.

Speaker C:

If I just want to go boost my spirits, I just go walk through this.

Speaker C:

Oh, my gosh, look at this.

Speaker B:

But it's more work.

Speaker B:

Because now you're like, I gotta have that, but where am I gonna put it?

Speaker C:

But something that I saw that I have not seen is they now have not just porcelain slabs that are approximately a quarter inch thick.

Speaker C:

Even in the big panoramic slabs, they have it in 2 cm full through body veining in a porcelain slab.

Speaker C:

So where it's a little bit more what I would say, it opens the door for other creative installations with that structure to it.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

So now there's.

Speaker C:

They're not.

Speaker C:

They're really not very fragile.

Speaker C:

And you can cut it with basically a circular wet saw.

Speaker B:

Exactly.

Speaker A:

Plus the mitered edge like you were talking about.

Speaker A:

Your brother can do it by hand.

Speaker A:

You got that vein all the way.

Speaker A:

Makes the perfect corner.

Speaker C:

It's amazing.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Because all of a sudden, it's just stone.

Speaker B:

It's got the same thing.

Speaker B:

You're just gonna clean it, cut it, polish it.

Speaker B:

Good to go.

Speaker C:

And that's what I love.

Speaker C:

There's y'all show new products, but there's stuff like this.

Speaker C:

Honestly, I mean, I've been looking around, I haven't even seen it.

Speaker C:

But, like, some of the best stuff, like, it is so deep.

Speaker C:

The product launches and offerings that are coming out right now.

Speaker C:

And I don't know what y'all did.

Speaker C:

I know you said that some of the team was, like, got maybe a little bit excited this year and, like, really unleashed it.

Speaker C:

But y'all did with the product launches, too, the whole Artofino line.

Speaker A:

Oh, my gosh.

Speaker C:

If you have a palette.

Speaker B:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker A:

Fantastic.

Speaker A:

Oh, yeah, Fantastic.

Speaker B:

It's gorgeous.

Speaker C:

I get really excited about this tile and countertop stuff.

Speaker C:

It's really great.

Speaker C:

And we hadn't even talked about any of the exterior stuff.

Speaker B:

Oh, no, we'll get into that.

Speaker B:

But it's just.

Speaker B:

But then again, look behind us right here.

Speaker B:

This is absolutely gorgeous.

Speaker B:

And you guys have to watch the video on this sort of listen on the audio side.

Speaker B:

But it's really showing the current styles.

Speaker B:

re we're going right here for:

Speaker A:

Is when we come to KBIS and ibs, is we now launch our trend report right before.

Speaker A:

Before this.

Speaker A:

So then we can use that as the central idea theme for the booth and We've really got five core buckets that we look at again, this will all be available on all three of our websites.

Speaker A:

Valtile, American only, and Marazi.

Speaker A:

But you have earthbound serenity.

Speaker A:

You have refined indulgence.

Speaker A:

Vintage revival, rugged, minimalist.

Speaker A:

And my favorite is color craze, which just brings out that inner spirit, that child, that, hey, listen, any color works.

Speaker A:

If you want to put it in your room, it's going to work for you.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

I was talking or a trend, what would it be today?

Speaker A:

I'm feeling color crazy.

Speaker C:

I could sense that.

Speaker B:

There we go.

Speaker B:

My house.

Speaker B:

Our house is vintage revival all the way.

Speaker B:

That's our vibe right there.

Speaker B:

And I was talking to Michelle about that beforehand.

Speaker B:

We were having a great time talking about kind of the styles and black walnut, that kind of stuff.

Speaker B:

But what's cool with all of this, though, is that the United States, we have here in North America, we have our styles.

Speaker B:

Here's what's hot this year.

Speaker B:

But we're still very regional.

Speaker B:

What happens in the Pacific Northwest.

Speaker A:

That's right.

Speaker B:

Is related to what happens in the South.

Speaker B:

But there's these different feels and touches, even if it's in the same.

Speaker B:

Same style of contemporary or things like that.

Speaker A:

That's right.

Speaker B:

But you guys have to hit all of those around the country and be relevant in that.

Speaker B:

Because even though.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

You walk into a store and you go, oh, like Target is a great example.

Speaker B:

You walk into Target.

Speaker B:

It used to be they were 10 years behind on the style when you walked into that retail store.

Speaker B:

Now it's.

Speaker A:

They're on top of it.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

They're leading.

Speaker A:

My question is just go to go back, Chip, which one of the five.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

We got to get.

Speaker B:

We got.

Speaker B:

You're right.

Speaker B:

We can't miss that.

Speaker A:

That's important.

Speaker C:

It.

Speaker C:

I would say right now, what I'm most drawn to for wanting to experiment with is similar to you, which is the vintage revival, kind of the warmer, bold tones with heavy texture.

Speaker C:

I just feel like there's trends are interesting because I just feel like you need to be open to just being allowed to like what you like.

Speaker C:

And so I think that these are just frameworks to get your mind wrapped around a matching genre.

Speaker C:

But the fact that what these illuminate are.

Speaker C:

The fact that there's going to be product offerings that allow you to fully flesh out this style.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Which.

Speaker C:

So even if you just one tile or one finish, there's going to be more to allow you to finish the space.

Speaker C:

So you're not just going to be just strung out back.

Speaker C:

I love this one item, but I can't find anything to match.

Speaker C:

And I think that really is the magic with you.

Speaker C:

Talk about.

Speaker C:

There's brands that do color of the year.

Speaker C:

There's these style guys.

Speaker C:

Like, there's all this disparate stuff going on, but the whole idea.

Speaker C:

And I think as a manufacturer, you can speak to this even better than I.

Speaker C:

But this is a lens to look through what is going to be manufactured and available.

Speaker C:

So it's the dirt that we should put the shovel in, because otherwise it's going to be a shallow.

Speaker A:

Clearly, Chip is saying that he and Paulie have an avocado lamp.

Speaker A:

They're trying to convince us works in the room.

Speaker C:

Make it work.

Speaker C:

Make it work.

Speaker B:

I saw you scrolling through Facebook Marketplace the other day.

Speaker B:

Wanted to grab that off of there.

Speaker C:

Oh, my gosh.

Speaker B:

It was a two hour drive.

Speaker B:

I know.

Speaker C:

I'm about to get banned on Facebook Marketplace.

Speaker A:

It shows up.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

It's like, those guys are.

Speaker B:

Those guys are like drug dealers.

Speaker B:

Because once you pick something you like, they're like, but have you seen this?

Speaker B:

Yeah, but have you seen that?

Speaker C:

Then the algorithm takes over.

Speaker B:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker A:

And then you like this.

Speaker B:

Yeah, Exactly.

Speaker C:

That's a $200,000 boat.

Speaker C:

I thought I was looking at an avocado.

Speaker C:

I said, that's right.

Speaker C:

But do they have financing?

Speaker B:

But the boat fits in the vintage revival because it's an old crisscross.

Speaker A:

There you go.

Speaker A:

Now we're going.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker C:

Are you a boat guy?

Speaker A:

I love.

Speaker A:

Boating's fantastic.

Speaker A:

But in the end, I'm a golfer and I'm a skier.

Speaker A:

That's my jam.

Speaker B:

I love boats.

Speaker B:

I love more than boats.

Speaker B:

Friends with boats.

Speaker A:

100%.

Speaker A:

100%.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Now you're preaching, but it's a little sensitive because I've got one.

Speaker B:

I know.

Speaker C:

And so I'm on the other side.

Speaker C:

Boat means for sale.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Boat means bust out another thousand, because that's what it is to fix anything.

Speaker C:

Lord have mercy.

Speaker B:

It's worse than the house.

Speaker C:

What have you seen?

Speaker C:

Have you been around the show very much, Eric?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

It's funny to see some of the stuff that you see out there.

Speaker B:

You guys are so good with color and texture and things like that.

Speaker B:

And it is so prevalent now out there.

Speaker B:

Even companies that do toilet fixtures like Toto now has color.

Speaker B:

And they've been the.

Speaker B:

The Ford model of.

Speaker B:

As long as you want the one color, like the model T.

Speaker B:

As long as you get a black, you're fine.

Speaker B:

You got it.

Speaker B:

Ford.

Speaker A:

There you go.

Speaker B:

They've been white.

Speaker B:

That way for generations.

Speaker B:

And now even they're introducing colors.

Speaker B:

So it really shows you how color and texture and all of these things are really starting to come out and be embraced.

Speaker B:

You guys have been on that for a number of years.

Speaker A:

Absolutely.

Speaker A:

At the talk of the show, everybody's talking about the dress, the black dress and the black toilet at Kohler, which is unbelievable, Right?

Speaker B:

Unbelievable.

Speaker A:

Very cool that they did that.

Speaker A:

Put those two together and you wouldn't have done it together.

Speaker A:

But it's fantastic marketing and it taps into what the consumers are thinking about.

Speaker C:

I think people are a little volatile on the black toilet, though.

Speaker A:

Quite a bit.

Speaker C:

One way or the other.

Speaker B:

Oh yeah.

Speaker B:

It depends.

Speaker C:

I like it.

Speaker C:

And the.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

That was very funny.

Speaker A:

That was good.

Speaker C:

We all know.

Speaker C:

We all know.

Speaker A:

We were talking about it last night and they were like, I don't need digital information from the toilet.

Speaker A:

I think there's a line where we cross.

Speaker B:

I think it's the rice cooker that gives you the weather for today.

Speaker A:

I really don't need that.

Speaker A:

That's a safe zone.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

On an aside, I do a lot of toilet stuff.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Professionally.

Speaker B:

And.

Speaker C:

And I paid for that.

Speaker B:

That's pretty amazing.

Speaker A:

That's a whole separate podcast.

Speaker B:

That's a whole marketing.

Speaker B:

I didn't hear it until it actually.

Speaker C:

Came out of my mouth.

Speaker B:

Coming out on podcasts.

Speaker C:

Actually, the.

Speaker C:

I love what I call the dumb toilet.

Speaker C:

A really quality mechanical system.

Speaker C:

And then the cleansing seat thing on top is like the bolt on functionality that kind of can do everything else toilet.

Speaker C:

Intelligent toilets do.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

But.

Speaker C:

But sometimes you just want the thing to flush and you just need a software update.

Speaker A:

I don't need it.

Speaker A:

I don't want to scan a QR code.

Speaker A:

Exactly.

Speaker B:

Or grab the app.

Speaker C:

Where is my app money at 2.

Speaker B:

O'Clock in the morning?

Speaker B:

Exactly.

Speaker B:

But no, it's good.

Speaker C:

Technology is everywhere.

Speaker A:

It really is.

Speaker C:

With all the stuff.

Speaker C:

Could you describe.

Speaker C:

I'm interested in this too because we talk about design and style specifically as it come to some of the imaging technology.

Speaker C:

How is it that you guys are actually getting even more realistic, even just with the two dimensional visuals on some of this product?

Speaker A:

We spend a tremendous amount of time at Daltile on product development.

Speaker A:

And it.

Speaker B:

Sure.

Speaker A:

And it starts.

Speaker B:

We.

Speaker A:

We send our teams to Italy, we send our teams to quarries.

Speaker A:

We send.

Speaker A:

They look at whether it's hardwood, whether it's marble, whether it's concrete.

Speaker A:

We look at what esthetically that product is supposed to look like.

Speaker A:

And then by the way, turning that then created a pressed clay into making it look realistic like that.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And consistently repeat it.

Speaker A:

Not easy to do.

Speaker A:

Our can be.

Speaker A:

Our downtown manufacturing team does an amazing job.

Speaker A:

And it's all about that top layer.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

You have to have.

Speaker A:

You're building a core.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And then when you press and you apply the right heat, the right stability on top, that's what makes a difference.

Speaker A:

So we come up with a tremendous amount of product.

Speaker A:

We launch a lot of product, but we take our time doing so because we can't be fast to market.

Speaker A:

We can't have fast, fast, fast fashion.

Speaker A:

We can't have fast fashion.

Speaker A:

We have to be on trend.

Speaker A:

We have to make sure that we can repeat it.

Speaker A:

Because of the dependability from Daltile Marazi and American Oleanne about what we're going to offer.

Speaker A:

We spend a lot of time.

Speaker A:

It's great that you bring that out.

Speaker A:

We look at technology really three ways.

Speaker A:

There's the selection process of the technology.

Speaker A:

We use that from our stylizer, our Daltile stylizer.

Speaker A:

What is it going to look like in that room?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Then we go to the technology that's on the product.

Speaker A:

And my two favorite ones.

Speaker A:

And we talked about a couple today.

Speaker A:

Stepwise.

Speaker A:

Love stepwise.

Speaker A:

50% more slip resistant than the competition.

Speaker B:

That's huge.

Speaker A:

Absolutely.

Speaker B:

And it looks good.

Speaker B:

That's the other thing.

Speaker B:

It doesn't look like.

Speaker A:

So you can't even see it.

Speaker B:

It doesn't look like soap.

Speaker A:

It's a secret.

Speaker A:

It's magic.

Speaker A:

Daltao magic.

Speaker A:

Then you have Defend microband.

Speaker A:

That's microband eliminates 99% of the mold, mildew and bacterial growth.

Speaker A:

So it's that confidence, that peace of mind that they don't even realize they're getting it, but they're going to come back and want more of that.

Speaker A:

Then it's the technology that we use to get the product to market.

Speaker A:

We have over 200 locations that are our service centers that have all of our products.

Speaker A:

We have our.

Speaker A:

You talked about the slab yard, our studios, our design centers to bring that all together so that someone can select it and know that they're getting the right product for their home.

Speaker A:

So those are the three core technology pieces we use at Dal Tile.

Speaker B:

And I'm a color guy and I'm sure you've seen tile be made.

Speaker B:

And it's absolutely amazing because you'll see before it goes into the kiln, you're like, wow, that's this weird brown color.

Speaker B:

And like, how's that going to look when it comes out the other side of the kiln?

Speaker B:

And this is bright Green.

Speaker B:

And I'm like, okay.

Speaker C:

Gotta know what you're doing.

Speaker B:

You gotta know what you're doing.

Speaker B:

Because the color thing really messes with your head of.

Speaker B:

I don't know how that burnt, aged, glazed and turns out something completely different.

Speaker B:

But you have to think that way.

Speaker B:

Of course in the development process.

Speaker B:

Which is crazy.

Speaker A:

Widen it.

Speaker A:

Faces.

Speaker A:

We talk about faces.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

Each tile is gonna have a different face.

Speaker A:

There's going to be a repeat.

Speaker A:

There has to be at some point.

Speaker A:

But we go as wide as we can so that you don't see a repeat in a large scale floor.

Speaker A:

That's really important.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

When you value de.

Speaker A:

Engineer it, when you value engineer it down, you're going to bring out pieces like that and they're going to say, hey, at a.

Speaker A:

Maybe at a home center or some other place, it doesn't think of the quality like that they're going to have.

Speaker A:

Every six faces is going to be a repeat.

Speaker A:

You're going to see that.

Speaker A:

That knot or that vein come through and it just doesn't look good.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And that's again one of the things with what I'd call the entry grades of tile out there.

Speaker B:

Not the dial tile stuff but the stuff you're buying online.

Speaker B:

This place, the discount center or whatever.

Speaker B:

You've installed a ton of tile.

Speaker B:

I've installed a ton of tile.

Speaker B:

When I see somebody that's brought that onto the job site, I'm like awesome.

Speaker B:

It's not consistent, it's not flat.

Speaker B:

You can have the best install.

Speaker B:

It still doesn't look great.

Speaker B:

For those varied reasons of it's the exact same one thing of tile.

Speaker B:

And you can only move it so many ways to make it look good.

Speaker C:

I look at building materials across the board.

Speaker C:

It's like you got to think of it like cost of ownership of a car.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

You know you might buy something that's really cheap to buy but you're working on it all the time.

Speaker C:

I won't name names.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

We all know this.

Speaker C:

We all have our own experiences.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

But building materials are no different.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Sometimes it's worth paying a slight premium for a highly engineered, very consistent, beautiful, long lasting material because it ends up being less to install just by the fact that you're going to have great irregularity of image.

Speaker C:

Natural.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

It's mother's nature's best.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker C:

Or they're going to all be completely square and rectified.

Speaker C:

You're not going to have some weird cupping on run one that you're going to have to go back and get more.

Speaker C:

And then your installer is like, now this is going to be all those hidden things that ends up raising its head later.

Speaker C:

You just start out with quality product.

Speaker C:

You're going to get a better result.

Speaker A:

Exactly right.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And then, by the way, when the tile guy went down to pick up the other box, they're the wrong color, even though they're the same color and.

Speaker C:

They might be out.

Speaker C:

And then you're done.

Speaker B:

And you'll never find that other one again because it was a container full of it, and it's never to be seen again.

Speaker A:

That's right.

Speaker C:

And then it's always the topic of conversation.

Speaker C:

Why?

Speaker C:

What did you do with the floor right here?

Speaker B:

Don't ask, don't ask, don't ask.

Speaker C:

That's why we have this weird apron.

Speaker C:

Like, was there a medallion in the movie?

Speaker A:

No, this is design settings.

Speaker B:

Exactly.

Speaker C:

Now my wife's not talking to me for a week again.

Speaker B:

The Hail Mary shot.

Speaker B:

She didn't have to tear it all out and do it over again.

Speaker B:

That's what that was.

Speaker C:

We've all experienced those things, but just by doing so many projects, there's things that you pick up like that, where quality material out of the gate is where you should start every time.

Speaker A:

100%.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And it's not that much more, to be honest.

Speaker B:

This isn't like buying the.

Speaker B:

The key and going to the Bentley.

Speaker C:

This is.

Speaker B:

This is like a model jump.

Speaker A:

Oh.

Speaker B:

I want the heated seats versus not the heated seats.

Speaker A:

It matters who installs it.

Speaker A:

Like, a lot of my friends will come to us, and I want them to use Deltile products of our three brands.

Speaker A:

But importantly, I want you to have the right installer because otherwise, it's just.

Speaker A:

You're not gonna be happy.

Speaker C:

No.

Speaker B:

And that's like, my buddy.

Speaker B:

We gave my buddy William a hard time last week.

Speaker A:

We did?

Speaker C:

William.

Speaker B:

Remember William last year?

Speaker B:

Remember William?

Speaker B:

We were talking about him.

Speaker B:

And again, he's my buddy.

Speaker B:

Unfortunately, he just moved to Pittsburgh, so now I gotta fly him back to do tile jobs because he's the guy that sits there and does the.

Speaker B:

The.

Speaker B:

Puts the safety glasses on and eyeballs the miter on the 45 in the outside corner.

Speaker B:

Nails it every time.

Speaker B:

And I'm just like, you're gonna have.

Speaker C:

To find a new tile guy.

Speaker C:

You can't fly in tile guys.

Speaker C:

Come on.

Speaker A:

The tools, everything.

Speaker B:

Exactly.

Speaker B:

That's a lot of.

Speaker A:

You know what?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Your tile job just got really expensive.

Speaker B:

It did.

Speaker C:

That's right.

Speaker A:

But.

Speaker C:

That's right.

Speaker C:

You know what?

Speaker C:

That's great.

Speaker B:

I've done it since I was 13.

Speaker B:

So we'll just call it family time.

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah, let him fly himself.

Speaker A:

He'll be good.

Speaker C:

You know, though, it's like a general idea though, is this almost like a public service announcement?

Speaker C:

Because I think generally the population doesn't have a great grasp on this piece.

Speaker C:

The biggest thing that you can do as a homeowner and contractors realize this if they've done work for any length of time.

Speaker C:

Yeah, it's all about floor prep, but it's about floor prep and wall prep regardless of what material you're using.

Speaker C:

Even, even if you're using an LVT or whatever.

Speaker C:

That's, that's nothing fancy.

Speaker C:

It doesn't even look that great.

Speaker C:

This is all about getting consistency and flatness.

Speaker C:

And then your installation, whatever it is, will be universally better.

Speaker C:

And so a lot of folks don't prioritize that or think that it's like, ah, it's close enough.

Speaker A:

So cut corners and you're, it's.

Speaker B:

You'll have problem.

Speaker C:

Spend the money on the floor, prep.

Speaker A:

The things that matter.

Speaker C:

Everything else will go great.

Speaker B:

What I like about the tile installers out there, those crafts people who are absolutely amazing, is that if you're a homeowner, you're a builder, you're looking for somebody out there to do the job.

Speaker B:

You're paying the money to get the good stuff, you're putting it in.

Speaker B:

There's so many other great organizations in the tile world out there, like cta, the other people that have their certifications that you go, how do I know if they're good?

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker B:

Little research, see if they're certified, see what their experiences are.

Speaker B:

Because you can buy the most beautiful product in the world.

Speaker B:

And if you have the bad install, it looks like a blind 8 year old did it.

Speaker C:

You got it.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

How many times you stayed in the hotel and you get out of the shower, you get out of the bathroom, oh my gosh, did you see that grout line?

Speaker A:

Is that terrible?

Speaker C:

I tell Polly, my wife, that all the time.

Speaker C:

She's just, she's seriously, like, I was actually here at the show.

Speaker C:

Somebody put the B on nahb in the main lobby on upside down.

Speaker B:

That's awesome.

Speaker C:

And so like the B, like the big B is all the time.

Speaker C:

That's the type of thing where I'm just like, my eyes look at.

Speaker C:

I can just not see it.

Speaker C:

Exactly.

Speaker C:

I'm that way for sure.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

We went and Julie and I went and hit the spa day when we got down here.

Speaker B:

And we're in this, I'm in this really nice spa on the men's side of things and I'm like, I'm staring at this tile.

Speaker B:

It's driving me, I'm supposed to be relaxing, but these two little 2 inch tiles are so badly out I couldn't let it go.

Speaker B:

I'm looking at it going, what is going on here?

Speaker A:

It was just, where's William?

Speaker B:

Where's William?

Speaker C:

But this is the same thing.

Speaker C:

This is the same thing.

Speaker C:

You always.

Speaker C:

People get different quotes, they get tile guide.

Speaker C:

I still have to get my mind right about this.

Speaker C:

Like I'm looking at for skilled trades to do a lot of this stuff in areas that I don't have a strong network like a new part of town, that's a problem.

Speaker C:

So the issue is, yeah, you get multiple bids and of course you're wanting to get the best value price.

Speaker B:

Sure.

Speaker C:

But if you haven't seen multiple jobs done in the last 12 months that are very close to what you are having done, then you have no idea what you're going to get.

Speaker C:

And so I just recommend that's what you need to look for, do your research.

Speaker C:

And again, it's cliche, but it's not always the lowest price ending up being the lowest price.

Speaker B:

Oh, the lowest price is usually the most expensive price because in many cases it stalls out.

Speaker C:

They under bid it, they don't want to finish the job, then you're just fighting and then you end up having to find somebody else and then you end up having.

Speaker C:

Then they have you for lunch.

Speaker B:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker C:

So you end up paying more for two people and then nobody has the pride to finish it up.

Speaker C:

So it's a cataclysmic snowball effect.

Speaker A:

Great point.

Speaker B:

It is.

Speaker B:

Because you're going to do it twice and that's way more than your highest bid.

Speaker A:

Do it right, do it right.

Speaker B:

The first time I was out at a job site this last year, guy called up listen to the radio show and he was literally five miles away.

Speaker B:

I went out and he had paid a remodeler to come out and work on his parents house.

Speaker B:

And I walk in the bathroom, they've got the tub in the shower, surrounds around and there's drywall behind it.

Speaker B:

And he's half put up the tile.

Speaker A:

Oh boy.

Speaker B:

And I'm like, oh boy.

Speaker B:

All right, you're starting over, buddy.

Speaker B:

Starting over.

Speaker C:

Yep, yep.

Speaker C:

But this is where people that don't know, they don't know and they may never know.

Speaker B:

Education is key on that.

Speaker B:

From a homeowner and a contractor for trying to find that sub.

Speaker A:

There is a bit of a Murphy's Law, though.

Speaker A:

Sorry to interrupt.

Speaker A:

With family projects, you know.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

You think mom wants something?

Speaker A:

Oh, boy.

Speaker A:

I hope this is gonna be this.

Speaker A:

It's gonna be tough.

Speaker B:

Mom wants something.

Speaker B:

Mom.

Speaker B:

For me, family costs more.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Just because you've got to deal with family.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

It's a family tax.

Speaker B:

Can I get the family discount?

Speaker B:

You don't want the family discount.

Speaker B:

Love my family, but there's more work involved.

Speaker A:

That's exactly right.

Speaker A:

Because you want it.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

It matters.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

You want them to tell everybody, and.

Speaker B:

I'm going to hear about it for the next 22.

Speaker B:

Thanksgiving, it's not.

Speaker B:

So there's a price for that.

Speaker A:

That's exactly right.

Speaker C:

Or it could be your way out.

Speaker B:

Absolutely.

Speaker C:

You only have to do it so.

Speaker A:

Bad before you're released or hiring.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker C:

And you're not invited to Thanksgiving.

Speaker C:

Absolutely.

Speaker A:

You show up and the job's done.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker B:

There we go.

Speaker C:

Genius.

Speaker B:

Genius.

Speaker C:

Three steps ahead.

Speaker B:

Absolutely.

Speaker C:

So I'm.

Speaker C:

I'm curious because you talk to so many people, Eric, and obviously I think you could.

Speaker C:

I have my own ways of vetting and finding resources for an average homeowner.

Speaker C:

What would you tell somebody?

Speaker C:

Where do you go?

Speaker C:

What are the most key things to look for?

Speaker C:

I think contractors could glean a little bit of this, too, because we get in tunnel vision.

Speaker B:

I figure out what the laws are in my states, where I'm at, where I'm located, Do they need to be licensed, bonded, insured, contract.

Speaker A:

Great starting point to me.

Speaker B:

I start there because if they've at least started to follow the rules and the laws that I go, okay, maybe they care about doing something right.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker B:

And that's the first thing I look at.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker B:

Can they navigate that first bit?

Speaker B:

Okay, that's a great start.

Speaker B:

That's all current.

Speaker B:

Then I just start looking at what.

Speaker B:

When they give a quote out, what's it say?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

If they come in and go bathroom, remodel.

Speaker B:

$23,000.

Speaker B:

Sign here.

Speaker A:

One line.

Speaker B:

One line.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I'm out.

Speaker B:

But if they go through and you start asking the questions.

Speaker B:

Okay, what do we need to do for prep here?

Speaker B:

What do you see when you're walking through the job site and they go, we've got to do this and this.

Speaker B:

And when I see a nice line, itemized bid of what's going on, then I'm starting to get a feel that at least they understand the project, because that's half of the problem.

Speaker B:

Somebody will come out and they don't know you've got somebody that this is my first bathroom remodel.

Speaker B:

And they're never going to tell you that, but you start looking at going, okay, you don't understand the process here.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker B:

So if you can see them document that process and get through with that.

Speaker B:

And then, of course, you can always.

Speaker B:

The referral thing is cool.

Speaker B:

If you've got a friend that's been through it, that.

Speaker B:

That's great.

Speaker B:

Friends and family.

Speaker B:

I've seen plenty of contractors out there that weren't good contractors that you're now calling their cousin, their buddy, and they're the referrals and the checking out there.

Speaker C:

My son is so wonderful at this.

Speaker A:

Yes, he did my bathroom.

Speaker B:

Absolutely.

Speaker A:

Once.

Speaker C:

Once, Never again.

Speaker B:

That was just last Christmas.

Speaker B:

And so finding that stuff out.

Speaker B:

And really, I say two things.

Speaker B:

One, you need to go around and find that last project they were working on.

Speaker B:

But as a homeowner, you also have to be okay to be.

Speaker B:

To take those phone calls when the next person wants to your job.

Speaker B:

You got to pay it forward in that.

Speaker A:

When.

Speaker B:

When you get those two or three people that are calling you as a reference to go, how did it go?

Speaker A:

Yeah, I mean, if I'm in Pittsburgh, I'm calling William.

Speaker B:

Absolutely.

Speaker C:

I mean, so when Eric calls, is.

Speaker A:

Not available, he just goes right to voicemail for you.

Speaker C:

Is it something I said?

Speaker C:

Who is it?

Speaker C:

Who is it?

Speaker C:

Who is he?

Speaker A:

William's like the star of the show.

Speaker A:

He doesn't realize it.

Speaker C:

Who is this guy?

Speaker B:

Yeah, we're gonna have to.

Speaker B:

We're gonna have to get him on show here next time.

Speaker B:

I'll bring him in next year.

Speaker A:

We'll do that.

Speaker C:

I love it.

Speaker C:

I love it.

Speaker B:

And the funny thing is with that, you also have to know what you're working on.

Speaker B:

Working on a kitchen versus an outdoor kitchen, talking about exteriors.

Speaker B:

What's so big in outdoor living right now that's its own world outside of inside.

Speaker B:

That exterior person needs to understand a whole nother realm that's almost sometimes semi contradictory to what you're doing inside.

Speaker B:

Because it's a whole different process, especially when you're in areas that gets.

Speaker B:

They get a freeze or two in the air.

Speaker A:

We're spending a lot of time bringing our dealers and our network to understand that there are projects that can go outside and they can transition.

Speaker A:

Ask the customer what are they going to do and then come to us.

Speaker A:

We have a very large portfolio of products and installation systems on our Delta exteriors program.

Speaker A:

But we need to make sure we start small and educate as we go.

Speaker A:

You can't go to a homeowner and say, think about outside cladding.

Speaker A:

Cladding.

Speaker A:

They're going to have to Google cladding.

Speaker A:

But we start talking about pavered, you start talking about tread, you start talking about waterline tiles.

Speaker A:

They're like, okay, wow, I get that.

Speaker B:

Okay, that's in the pool.

Speaker C:

Yep, I get that.

Speaker A:

So very important.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Water control is one of the big things outside with cladding.

Speaker B:

When it's whether it's outside, you got to decide, okay, how am I going to control this, where's it going?

Speaker B:

And then how to make it work in the environment that it is.

Speaker B:

Whether it's Arizona or Minneapolis.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker C:

One of the things that I'm seeing a lot that's really exciting is it's technology.

Speaker C:

And slab stocks, like the porcelain slabs that are thick and structural enough to actually have what I call like a micro span, meaning they're strong enough to not have to be directly dirt or universally set on grade where they actually can stand these platforms.

Speaker C:

And the pods and platforms are really starting to become mainstream market, which is really cool.

Speaker C:

And for anybody that's listening or watching, basically, they look like these plastic, cylindrical, almost like screw jacks.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

They actually feel somewhat lightweight.

Speaker C:

But they're engineered basically to pick up the intersection of tile, of stone, of, of decking, where you can have these cool raised platforms above grade, which ultimately give you tons of flexibility on low slung like rooftops, backyards with a gravel base, a deck.

Speaker C:

That's right, all of these things.

Speaker C:

You can put decking and have flush transitions between dissimilar materials, which open up the design aesthetic in a huge way.

Speaker C:

But these are also what you guys have really come to the table with.

Speaker C:

A lot of the exterior porcelain slabs that are indistinguishable from the most beautiful stones come in huge sections and you can create these amazing raised areas.

Speaker C:

But of course, they're great for direct sand set or gravel set.

Speaker B:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker C:

Or even bonded.

Speaker B:

Yeah, you can do anything with that.

Speaker B:

And that's the beautiful part of it.

Speaker B:

And as long as you know the environment you're working in, you're following the technical directions and using the right materials to install it, you're going to be set.

Speaker B:

And it's a generational type product.

Speaker B:

That's the thing that I think going back to style with Dal tile, what you're doing here, this isn't paint colors.

Speaker B:

This is not something that two years ago, hey, it's out, we're going here.

Speaker B:

,:

Speaker C:

That's right.

Speaker A:

Go ahead.

Speaker A:

It's interesting.

Speaker A:

We have these four, three.

Speaker A:

Wow.

Speaker A:

Walls on the corners of our space.

Speaker A:

The fourth one being exteriors.

Speaker A:

And the one directly behind us here is American Elaine.

Speaker A:

And it's this pink tile.

Speaker A:

I almost need to take a picture and show everybody, because for the viewers, it's amazing.

Speaker A:

We'll have pictures on our website.

Speaker A:

But it's funny.

Speaker A:

I was talking to some kitchen to bath people yesterday, and I was like, how many of those did you tear down over the last 10 years?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

But now it's coming back.

Speaker C:

This is a better pink.

Speaker B:

It's a much better pink.

Speaker C:

It's a much.

Speaker C:

We almost need a new.

Speaker C:

Mauve and pink are like two things of rebranding.

Speaker C:

We need whatever that tone is, its own name, because it's good and it's solid.

Speaker C:

And I'm actually going to be using this color in the treehouse builds I'm working on right now.

Speaker C:

That's awesome.

Speaker C:

Okay.

Speaker C:

I'm so excited about it.

Speaker A:

I like that.

Speaker C:

And I don't want to call it pink, and I don't want to call it whatever.

Speaker B:

I'm sorry.

Speaker B:

I'm old enough to.

Speaker B:

But mauve.

Speaker B:

I think of the:

Speaker C:

Gold, and I go, it doesn't have a great connotation.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker B:

We got to rebrand that.

Speaker B:

We need new color names.

Speaker C:

Yeah, that's right.

Speaker C:

Exactly.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

We got to come up with something different.

Speaker A:

So we'll work on that.

Speaker B:

I think we need to have a naming party.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker B:

You know, might take some whiskey or some beer or some good coffee for you.

Speaker B:

We'll figure it out.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

What y'all are doing, like, obviously, as you mentioned earlier, you guys and your entire design staff that have to think, not just next quarter or even next year, all are forecasting on trend visuals.

Speaker B:

I'm sure you're five to ten years out.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker C:

Let's talk about color a little bit, because color is one of those.

Speaker C:

I call them a cyclical trend.

Speaker C:

Always oscillating like a sine wave.

Speaker C:

Muted neutrals and then bold primaries.

Speaker C:

Saturated colors.

Speaker C:

Where are we now?

Speaker C:

I see products, but what's happening?

Speaker A:

I think to step back a little bit.

Speaker A:

You look at.

Speaker A:

All right, so when you look at we manufacture, this is gonna be a crazy number.

Speaker A:

1.5 billion square feet.

Speaker A:

We're going out of places to tile.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker C:

A lot.

Speaker A:

But when we look at color, we don't want to be necessarily on the very, very front edge of it, because if it trends back then all of a sudden, we're left.

Speaker A:

We've shareholders inventory heavy, too.

Speaker A:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker B:

Inventory.

Speaker A:

But right now, you're getting warmer.

Speaker B:

We got a billion tones are getting warm.

Speaker A:

For so long, we had that.

Speaker A:

That marble has been just unbelievable, right?

Speaker A:

Marble and gray and cold.

Speaker A:

Cool vibe.

Speaker A:

Now we're getting a little more warmer.

Speaker A:

You're getting a little more reds are coming in.

Speaker A:

They're more natural toned.

Speaker A:

You can see some of our products that we have out here.

Speaker A:

That natural texture, that earthy feel to it to give that warmth.

Speaker A:

And then on the other end of that spectrum, you've got.

Speaker A:

We talked about color craze.

Speaker A:

You've got this pop of color, and I think that indicates that the market is getting better.

Speaker A:

When people start to put color in their home chips.

Speaker A:

Chip and polar putting in pink, they feel good, so they express themselves through color.

Speaker A:

And we have to make sure at Dal Tile, because we don't lack SKUs, that we have enough of that color band that looks forward just enough that we can keep our plants going in the right direction.

Speaker A:

But everybody knows that, hey, this color palette is probably good for the next three to five years, but then we'll have tweaks coming in it, right?

Speaker A:

Sure.

Speaker A:

Some will come, some will go, but this has to be a path that we go forward with from here.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

It's got to be confusing, because if you look.

Speaker B:

Let's go after paint brands for a minute.

Speaker B:

Sorry, guys.

Speaker B:

You look at the color year from, and it's.

Speaker B:

It's all over the board.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

When you see.

Speaker B:

Because you.

Speaker B:

If you jump online and look, there's.

Speaker B:

Let's say there's 15 paint companies out there, right.

Speaker B:

And there's 15 color of the years.

Speaker B:

And I'm like, they're all over the place.

Speaker B:

They're all over the place.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And paint, though, I feel like, is a paint.

Speaker C:

Color is a commoditized tract.

Speaker C:

I think that you can put a lot less credence in a paint color of the year than.

Speaker C:

And what y'all are doing with curations with.

Speaker C:

This is a much more solidified scenario.

Speaker B:

No question.

Speaker B:

No question.

Speaker C:

But I'm seeing the greens coming out really strong, especially, like, more of these emerald tones.

Speaker A:

Emeralds are back.

Speaker A:

You know, we mentioned it before.

Speaker A:

Jewel tones are.

Speaker A:

We were talking about earlier with our color trends, Michelle, and we're going through it.

Speaker A:

Jewel tones coming back with your.

Speaker A:

When you get into your serenity and your refined indulgence, those jewel tones are coming back into style, which is very important.

Speaker B:

That orange rust.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Just what you see in the Vintage revival.

Speaker B:

That's back again.

Speaker B:

Also.

Speaker C:

I'm looking at one right now.

Speaker C:

So I've installed Remedy tile for the last several years.

Speaker C:

But this color, I think it's called Aura.

Speaker C:

Is that what y'all named it?

Speaker C:

So it's like this beautiful mixed media of, like, glossy terracotta and, like, rich, like, warm brown tones together.

Speaker C:

But these are, like two by nine tiles that aesthetically, in this vertical orientation are just.

Speaker C:

It's a showstopper.

Speaker C:

I think somebody was telling me that, like, this has been, like, one of.

Speaker A:

The leaders, 100%, and it's got a pop to it.

Speaker A:

It's got that artesian kind of handmade tile look.

Speaker C:

It doesn't look like the standard.

Speaker A:

Does not look like the standard.

Speaker A:

You don't want to look like your neighbor.

Speaker A:

You want to stand out and do your own thing, be an individual.

Speaker B:

Yeah, it's got this swanky 70s vibe to it.

Speaker B:

That's really cool in a really cool kind of way.

Speaker A:

I feel like there's music behind what you just said.

Speaker A:

There should be some type of cool, you know?

Speaker C:

But now you'll ask, did you see the fluted accents that they have now.

Speaker A:

That go with it?

Speaker A:

So, again, monster is important.

Speaker C:

It certainly is that earthly, that earthbound serenity vibe together.

Speaker C:

But it's still absolutely sophisticated enough to go in the most modern aesthetic as well.

Speaker B:

If you want that spa feel, you can get that warm spa feel out of it.

Speaker B:

It can go in a kitchen, but.

Speaker C:

You get the light reflection, which is one of the best reasons I love tile.

Speaker B:

Oh, my gosh.

Speaker C:

Is the way that the different finish options truly reflect light.

Speaker C:

The light reflection of tile, just in general, is, I think, a superior design tool that can be leveraged above so many other materials.

Speaker A:

We talked about doing the home homework before you do an install of, let's say tile lighting is such an important feature, because if you have the wrong lighting, it's going to look completely different.

Speaker A:

The color is going to look different.

Speaker A:

You've got to make sure you put your thought into what lighting structure you.

Speaker B:

Need the best lighting.

Speaker B:

You never notice because you walk in and you're like, this is stunning.

Speaker B:

And you don't know why, but you go, wow, this pops.

Speaker C:

People say I light up the space, but it's really my forehead.

Speaker C:

Yeah, it's all about light reflection.

Speaker C:

Yeah, that's right.

Speaker A:

That was pretty good.

Speaker A:

Paulie loved that one.

Speaker A:

That was my favorite.

Speaker B:

Trying to balance out my hair.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker B:

You do you own a flare on the screen?

Speaker B:

That was lens flare.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker C:

It's off my Teeth.

Speaker B:

And that's the fun part right now is, is that you can sit here and design.

Speaker B:

Let's say you're doing a great room.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker B:

And you've got that outdoor space.

Speaker B:

You can put in the big nanowall style doors that open up.

Speaker B:

You can take that kitchen and take it all the way out to the pool.

Speaker C:

Same material.

Speaker B:

Same material.

Speaker C:

Same material.

Speaker C:

And then take it up an outdoor fireplace, bring it up onto the countertop.

Speaker C:

So very sleek, modern looks.

Speaker C:

Or much more traditional.

Speaker C:

But connecting those indoor outdoor spaces is really where the technology comes in.

Speaker C:

Super strong 100 people don't.

Speaker A:

People have to understand that they can do that.

Speaker A:

And we have to get that message across both through our visualization, our websites, all of the home improvement shows that are out there.

Speaker A:

We have to make sure people know that, hey, you take that, that you have a whole space outside that you're not really thinking about doing and creating something that's going to be really good habitat for your family.

Speaker C:

One one mentality to think about is it's a lot easier to take an outside material and use it inside than the other one than an inside material outside.

Speaker C:

Because outside is tough.

Speaker C:

There's uv, there's slip resistant, there's temperature fluctuations.

Speaker C:

Product.

Speaker A:

That's right.

Speaker C:

People should check like, oh, I like this.

Speaker C:

And it's a little bit more of an unorthodox utilization on the end.

Speaker C:

You can use any of that stuff on the inside.

Speaker B:

Totally.

Speaker C:

Which is awesome.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Build your portfolio up.

Speaker A:

Agreed.

Speaker A:

Totally agree.

Speaker B:

And nowadays with trough drains and things that you can have custom made, it gets.

Speaker B:

When you get outside and you're like, oh, I'm worried about.

Speaker B:

On a heavy rain day, you can put in a little 1 inch or 2 inch drain that goes all along the front of the the space as you're coming into the house or going out into the backyard, for instance, through those doors, you've got all the water control.

Speaker B:

It's just beautiful.

Speaker A:

Going back to that as you prep for a job.

Speaker A:

It's things like subfloor heating.

Speaker A:

It's things like niche lighting.

Speaker A:

It's niche in the showers.

Speaker A:

It's smaller accents that wow.

Speaker A:

We're staying at a hotel that has beautiful accent lighting in the shower.

Speaker A:

And it's wow.

Speaker A:

This is.

Speaker A:

You don't really think about it until you have it.

Speaker A:

So you got to think about that ahead of time.

Speaker A:

And that's a big push for Daltile.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Bringing it back to Toilet Talk.

Speaker C:

Got a heated toilet seat.

Speaker C:

You don't know what you're missing until you got it.

Speaker C:

There's Something about warm tile.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

That just.

Speaker C:

You're like, man, you can't go back.

Speaker A:

It is.

Speaker C:

I was so in my bathroom at home, for some reason, I have it on a timer.

Speaker C:

So every morning.

Speaker C:

And you just get so used to it until it's not there.

Speaker C:

I don't know if, like, a breaker popped or something.

Speaker C:

I walked in and you're just like, oh.

Speaker B:

Or you go take a shower in the middle of the day.

Speaker B:

Because I have mine running all day.

Speaker B:

I have it in the morning.

Speaker B:

The evenings come in the middle of the day, and you're like, oh, man.

Speaker A:

Wow.

Speaker B:

One of the most floor is the same temperature as a room.

Speaker B:

What's going on?

Speaker C:

One of the most luxurious things I think that you could put in a new remodel, especially for a bathroom room, is heat your shower seat.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker C:

Under the tile, there's something like, subconsciously brace yourself.

Speaker C:

It's like when you get in the shower and you're like.

Speaker C:

You stay and you're, like, feeling the water.

Speaker C:

Feeling the water until it's good enough to just swoop in.

Speaker C:

But then you have the same thing.

Speaker C:

Like, if you're like, okay, for the ladies, if they're, like, sitting down to shave or something, shower or something like.

Speaker B:

That, you're gonna sit down for a.

Speaker C:

Minute or try to hit the water on it until it's warm enough, and then you touch your back.

Speaker C:

But just the same thing you can do with radiant flooring.

Speaker C:

You can bring it up on that shower side, seating that back.

Speaker C:

And it is revolutionary.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

And not that much more money when you do it ahead of time.

Speaker A:

It's not the thing.

Speaker A:

Yeah, just.

Speaker A:

You've already said forethought.

Speaker A:

That's exactly.

Speaker B:

You've already got the power in the room to do that.

Speaker A:

That's exactly right.

Speaker B:

It's already there.

Speaker B:

And it's so simple, and it's a great way.

Speaker B:

And I found actually a solution today at the show for tile floors.

Speaker B:

Great example.

Speaker B:

So this happened at my house.

Speaker B:

You have the air coming in for the fan underneath the door.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

So in my house, the tile floor in the first two or three feet of the space was colder because I had the air coming in when the fan was on.

Speaker B:

So it was super cooling.

Speaker B:

That tile floor area.

Speaker B:

I found a door company that.

Speaker B:

And we actually.

Speaker B:

I just put the door in a few months ago at my house here at the show, and it has a groove in the door so the air comes through 50 CFM comes through the door through the decorative groove.

Speaker B:

So now your whole tile floor feels heated.

Speaker B:

So you don't have to worry about that cold spot walking in.

Speaker A:

That's pretty cool.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

That and the air exchange just between rooms is becoming so much more important.

Speaker C:

There's a lot more of the heat pump technology with heating and cooling systems, and even water heating is all moving towards heat pump technology, which requires basically air movement.

Speaker C:

And if you don't have enough volume of air, you have to share it between rooms.

Speaker C:

So these types of doors with ventilation.

Speaker B:

Ventilation built in.

Speaker C:

It's a big deal.

Speaker C:

And it looks beautiful.

Speaker B:

And the cool thing is, too, is it's quieter than a solid cold door because they designed it like a muffler so it keeps sound from going through.

Speaker B:

And I'm like, okay, you solved that tile problem in the bathroom in there.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

You got a bonus.

Speaker B:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker B:

Great.

Speaker B:

So that's the cool part, is how companies are coming together to fix some of those inherent issues that we ran into in spaces that you just accepted.

Speaker B:

Went well.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

There's air coming in.

Speaker B:

That's just going to happen there too.

Speaker B:

Oh, no.

Speaker B:

We got to solve now.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

100%.

Speaker C:

I love that.

Speaker C:

This is, I think this is one of the biggest things I love about, you know, these types of, this type of media, the podcast, where it's like, where else are people going to hear this type of stuff until you've done it wrong?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And then you paid for it.

Speaker C:

Now you're like, expert then, you know, but like, this is where you get that.

Speaker C:

Listen to stuff like this and you just learn and absorb so many things that you might not know it even existed.

Speaker A:

Research, ask questions, talk to friends.

Speaker A:

What worked, what didn't work, what would you do different on your next install, your next project, your next remodel.

Speaker A:

Yeah, that's stuff will pay off.

Speaker B:

And it's great in here because we've got so many trades people, designers, contractors, builders, everybody's in here.

Speaker B:

And the collaboration in this building.

Speaker B:

And then they get to come in here and see the new styles.

Speaker B:

The beautiful floor.

Speaker B:

People come in and go, that's a beautiful marble floor.

Speaker B:

And you go, porcelain.

Speaker C:

Exactly.

Speaker C:

I think one thing that I love about what we're seeing here and what I'm looking for as I walk around the floor is also product availability.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

I think I, I.

Speaker C:

Earlier this year, I was at the Consumer Electronics show, and as much as I love it, it's turned into such a concept car scenario that 75% of what's there that you're like, that's cool.

Speaker C:

Never even gets made.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker C:

Or it gets made in such a small quantity.

Speaker C:

That it becomes not practically available.

Speaker C:

This is another thing that I think everyone should be looking at.

Speaker C:

And whether it's brand leading or just you do enough research to understand stock volumes, you need to start with where you can actually get stuff.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And so you can fall in love with something and it might not be available for eight months.

Speaker C:

That's one thing, Patrick, that you and this team does so well.

Speaker C:

What you are showing.

Speaker C:

You can go get it.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

We don't.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And it's.

Speaker C:

And it's available in enough quantity to where you're not.

Speaker C:

You're not dying.

Speaker A:

To your point, there are strategies where people, CES does that.

Speaker A:

Christian Real Chronic show does that, where they push something out there.

Speaker A:

Let's gauge the reaction at the show and then decide a path forward.

Speaker B:

I call them design hand grenade.

Speaker B:

They throw it over there and go, let's see what happens.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker A:

And I think on this floor, I think there's a lot of people that do that.

Speaker A:

And when we launch a product, we're behind the product, and we're going to.

Speaker A:

We're going to stock it, we're going to inventory, we're going to merchandise it, we're going to make it available to whatever project needs that product.

Speaker B:

And what's great is, Chip, you're down in Georgia, I'm in Oregon.

Speaker A:

Yep.

Speaker B:

And we can go down to our local showroom and see it right there.

Speaker A:

That's exactly right.

Speaker C:

That's right.

Speaker B:

You know, and it's available like that across the United States, which is awesome.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And that's not as normal as people might think.

Speaker C:

It's a.

Speaker C:

It takes a huge commitment from the brand to make that happen.

Speaker A:

It does.

Speaker A:

And we've been doing it for 78 years.

Speaker C:

Wow.

Speaker A:

78 this month.

Speaker A:

Wow.

Speaker C:

Okay.

Speaker B:

We gotta have a big 80th birthday party here.

Speaker A:

We do.

Speaker A:

For sure.

Speaker A:

For sure.

Speaker A:

Maybe William will come.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

See?

Speaker C:

What do you do for what.

Speaker C:

What do you do for 80 years?

Speaker A:

What is 80?

Speaker C:

What is 80?

Speaker A:

What is eighty?

Speaker B:

I don't know.

Speaker A:

We're at the.

Speaker A:

Get a checker on that.

Speaker C:

We probably need jello.

Speaker A:

Does that edit button work?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Trending.

Speaker C:

Trending.

Speaker B:

I'll fix it in post.

Speaker B:

I'll fix it in post.

Speaker C:

Oh, gosh.

Speaker C:

I love it.

Speaker C:

I love it.

Speaker B:

So I wanted.

Speaker B:

Before we run out of time, I want to make sure that we talk about all the different stuff in here.

Speaker B:

But I mean, from tile to slabs to all of this stuff, it's so gorgeous, so beautiful.

Speaker B:

And what I think is so fun to walk into a booth like this is you get to see the style that fits in your aspect or your next project or whatever you're doing.

Speaker B:

Because there's really something for every style.

Speaker A:

In here, for every project.

Speaker A:

If you think about our, we read our business three ways, three verticals.

Speaker A:

We have our commercial business which is going after just that commercial business, whether it's restaurants, office space, hotels, whatever it may be.

Speaker A:

Then you have our new construction which could be your high volume production builders to your high volume production builders or your custom home builders.

Speaker A:

And then you have the, the largest market that we compete in is our remodel market.

Speaker A:

That's your dealer market, your kitchen and bath.

Speaker A:

And we want to make sure we have products as a company.

Speaker A:

We, we want, want a box of tile to go on every project, product, project that's out there.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So when we launch, we come to this show, we want to make sure that someone may be coming just for slab.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker A:

But hey, you know what, let's talk about porcelain.

Speaker A:

Because really, porcelain, we're not going anywhere with our quartz products we make in Dixon, Tennessee.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

But porcelain panels is really the future.

Speaker A:

It is, it's lighter now that your labors is still a little bit higher.

Speaker A:

But as more people evolve to using it.

Speaker A:

Yeah, that price is going to come down.

Speaker A:

That's the future.

Speaker A:

But you can discuss that with a quartz customer or countertop customer.

Speaker A:

Say, hey, you know what, have you thought about this?

Speaker A:

Now we have what's thicker?

Speaker A:

You have a veins through technology that really is going to help.

Speaker A:

Same thing with tile.

Speaker A:

You may be just thinking, I'm just, I'm a kitchen bath person.

Speaker A:

I just do backsplashes and cabinets.

Speaker A:

You know what, someone's going to put something on the floor.

Speaker A:

So let's talk about how we can put that into your showroom.

Speaker A:

So we look at everything we want to encompass it and then we put some products out there and it's like a little bit of an apple aspirational like, all right, you know what?

Speaker A:

I can do pink.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I can do it.

Speaker A:

And so that's what we're trying to capture here is to make sure everybody knows that what they want to accomplish, how they want to build their business to satisfy whatever customer they're working with, they get the product they're looking for.

Speaker B:

That simple.

Speaker C:

What I'd take away from this is that I think any project anybody does, one of the most important things that you need to do is you need to find something that you just absolutely love.

Speaker C:

You need a product that, that when.

Speaker B:

You walk in, grab it in the.

Speaker C:

Room and it makes you smile, whether it doesn't have to be a huge bit, it doesn't even have to be expensive, but just find something that you're just kind of carnally attracted to because that is definitely tied to the long term happiness of your space, which is what you're gonna live with.

Speaker C:

And what I will say is, when you walk into Daltial, there is no shortage of options to connect with you on that kind of emotional excitement.

Speaker C:

And again, whether it's the pink and.

Speaker C:

Or whatever, we're going to rename this color.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

We're rebranding pink for here.

Speaker C:

Or it's one of the big porcelain slabs.

Speaker C:

Just there's.

Speaker C:

It is just a candy shop.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Of.

Speaker C:

Of attractiveness and kind of this, like, emotional connection with product.

Speaker A:

Agreed.

Speaker C:

And even if it's in small quantity, this is a great spot to look.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I want to invite our audience too.

Speaker B:

If you have a new name for pink or mauve, head over to the website around the house online dot com.

Speaker B:

Send it in.

Speaker B:

Let's post this up.

Speaker B:

Let's see what people think.

Speaker B:

Let's have a little fun with this.

Speaker C:

That's right.

Speaker C:

We're all similarly complected.

Speaker C:

Maybe we should call it like the.

Speaker C:

The podcast crew.

Speaker C:

I feel like that's where we would go.

Speaker C:

Two days in South Beach.

Speaker A:

That's the color.

Speaker C:

That's right.

Speaker B:

If we were lucky, some of us might be in the burn unit, but.

Speaker C:

I think people that are listening can do better.

Speaker A:

Absolutely.

Speaker A:

Absolutely.

Speaker A:

We need some help, folks.

Speaker B:

Speaker A:

Speaker A:

Just go to our website and a local dealer is right there to help you.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And whether you're the builder, the hotel builder, or just the homeowner that's trying to figure out what's going on.

Speaker A:

Speaker A:

Speaker B:

Speaker B:

Speaker B:

Speaker C:

So it's gonna.

Speaker C:

I'm gonna be smiling beyond ear to.

Speaker B:

Ear every time you need William is what you're saying.

Speaker A:
